Ipswich Town Academy had a mixed weekend. The Under-18s were heavily beaten at Chelsea, but one of their most exciting young talents had a great weekend.
Despite leading at half-time, Mark Robinson’s side failed to get anything from the game at Cobham. However, academy schoolboy Tommy McLoughlin grabbed the headlines with a hat-trick for England in the FIFA U15 World Cup and Festival in Azerbaijan. Whilst it was a disappointing result for the Under-18s, it showed they have some exciting talent in the academy.
Town started brightly in the game, trying to play positive football. However, Joel Ladegbaye gave the Blues the lead after just 17 minutes. With the bright start, the visitors struggled to get going in the first half. Town went into the break with a deserved lead.
Despite having many positives against such a quality side, unfortunately it went downhill in the second half.
After the restart, Chelsea took control of the game. Jacob Dako brought the score level in the middle of the second half. However, Jacob Hall turned the game on its head just 4 minutes later.
From this point, the home side looked much more confident. Ipswich struggled to get going. Dako scored his second of the game late on, and Hezekiah Grimwade added to the score with a goal in injury time.
Whilst the result may seem harsh, it shows how ruthless the academy can be at the top level. It is important that you stay focused throughout the whole game.
One positive for Ipswich was that they were able to put their young players in front of some quality football. Preston Peal came on in the second half to gain more valuable experience.
The full-back, who has been with Tottenham Hotspur since the age of 7, has continued to gain opportunities in the age group. Playing against teams like Chelsea can be crucial to developing young players.
Learning from games like this can be just as important.
Despite it being a tough day for the Under-18s, there was much to celebrate for the academy. Tommy McLoughlin had an outstanding game for the England Under-15s, scoring a hat-trick in their 10-0 win over Cambodia in the FIFA U15 World Cup and Festival.
The forward has been starting regularly for England in the early stages. He has already helped the Young Lions to wins over Nicaragua and Montenegro. He scored 3 goals against Cambodia, which is another amazing achievement in a great run of form.
The tournament is set up in a unique way with 189 teams in 32 groups. They will face the Republic of Ireland and Zimbabwe next.
The defeat to Chelsea will obviously be disappointing for the Under-18s coaching staff and players. However, McLoughlin’s performance on the international stage gives another reason to be optimistic about the future.
Ipswich are continuing to heavily invest in developing young talent, and this has paid off in recent seasons. Now the challenge for the Under-18s is to bounce back from a tough afternoon. McLoughlin will be looking to continue his impressive form for England.
