The Kansas men's basketball team made a roster addition on Monday by adding depth and size with former Purdue forward Trey Kaufman-Renn, who was granted a sixth season of eligibility through a temporary restraining order last month.
At Big 12 Media Day on Tuesday at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Bill Self dismissed the notion that pursuing a sixth-year player who was drafted by an NBA team makes him a disruptor within the conference or college basketball as a whole.
"Disruptor? If we don't play with them, we're gonna play against them," Self said Tuesday. "All I want to do, within the guidelines of what's been set: how do we get our best team together? That's it. There's no disruption."
The Jayhawks announced the addition of Kaufman-Renn, who was taken in the second round of the 2026 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves, on Monday ahead of Big 12 Media Day.
Kaufman-Renn averaged 14.2 points and 8.3 rebounds per game last season at Purdue while shooting 57.8% from the field. His temporary restraining order remains in effect until a preliminary injunction hearing in the state of Indiana.
The 6-foot-9 forward was a finalist last season for the Karl Malone Award, which is given out annually to the nation’s top power forward. He averaged 18.5 points and 7.0 rebounds in the NCAA Tournament, where he helped the Boilermakers reach the Elite Eight, their second Elite Eight appearance in the last three years.
Kaufman-Renn is replacing freshman Grant Mordini on the Jayhawks' roster after Mordini suffered a season-ending patellar tendon injury.
Kansas came in at No. 18 in the preseason USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.
