The Minnesota Vikings have gone from surprise contenders to a team facing some uncomfortable questions at the most important position on the field. At 6-1, they remain atop the NFC North, but their six-game winning streak came to an end with a narrow 19-15 loss to the Detroit Lions last Sunday.
NFL insider Adam Schefter has only added fuel to the speculation, suggesting Minnesota’s quarterback position is one to watch before the trade deadline on Nov. 10.
Minnesota’s quarterback situation has become even more complicated with Kyler Murray ruled out for Week 9 because of a hamstring injury. Some observers have speculated that the absence could amount to a “soft benching,” although O’Connell said earlier this week that Murray remains Minnesota’s starter when healthy.
Vikings also announced that Carson Wentz will start against Buffalo on Monday Night Football.
Schefter recently discussed the situation on his podcast, hinting that the Vikings’ quarterback position is worth watching ahead of the Nov. 10 trade deadline.
“With everything going on, with Kyler Murray hurt, with Kyler Murray not producing, with the offense struggling, with Carson Wentz potentially starting. I’ll just say, with the Vikings trading away J.J. McCarthy, with everything, I’m watching the Vikings’ quarterback position,” Schefter said.
His comments quickly got fans talking about potential trade targets, with Las Vegas Raiders QB Kirk Cousins among the names mentioned.
One fan simply wrote, “(Raiders QB Kirk) Cousins.”
Another commenter added, “They’re about to trade for Kirk Cousins.”
Cousins was a popular choice among fans, with a third fan writing, “Kirk Cousins will be the move if I had to guess. Playing well, familiarity. Cheap.”
However, not everyone believes the Vikings will go after their former quarterback.
One fan suggested Daniel Jones could be the answer, writing, “I think the Vikings are going to trade for Daniel Jones. Not sure if that’s a good or bad thing for the Colts.”
Another commenter believes Schefter’s wording points toward a bigger move. “The way he talks, it seems like it would have to be either Kirk or [Justin] Herbert. Nothing else seems to make much sense [for him to be this] bold about it,” the fan wrote.
Another fan predicted a blockbuster move for Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Herbert, remarking, “Something in my gut tells me they’ll trade for Herbert.”
A reunion with Cousins appears to be one of the more realistic possibilities fans have discussed.
Cousins spent six seasons with Minnesota from 2018 to 2023 and is already familiar with head coach Kevin O’Connell’s offensive system. That experience could make him an appealing option for a team looking to make a change at quarterback midway through the season.
However, getting a deal done could be difficult. Las Vegas improved to 4-4 after beating the New York Jets 38-33, keeping itself in the AFC playoff picture. That leaves the Raiders with little reason to trade their starting quarterback in the middle of the season.
Then there’s Herbert. Landing the Chargers quarterback would give Minnesota an elite talent and could put the Vikings in the Super Bowl conversation. However, a deal would likely cost a significant haul of draft picks.
A more realistic option could be Colts quarterback Daniel Jones, who ranks 32nd in PFN’s QB Impact Score with a grade of 64.8, through eight weeks. His familiarity with O’Connell’s offensive system could make him an intriguing target, though Minnesota would also have to account for the remaining salary and guarantees in Jones’ two-year, $88 million deal with Indianapolis.
For now, though, it’s unclear whether the Vikings will make a move at all.
