Giorgi Mamardashvili was the hero for Liverpool on Wednesday as he helped the Reds knock Chelsea out of the Carabao Cup on penalties.
The Georgian had to save Emanuel Emegha’s spot-kick after Kostas Tsimikas and Ryan Gravenberch failed to convert, leaving Liverpool on the brink of an exit. Thankfully, he guessed right and kept the Reds in the game.
Mamardashvili also came close to saving one or two more penalties, going especially close to stopping Morgan Rogers’ low effort. According to the back-up goalkeeper, though, he had to rely on his own instincts rather than the data accumulated by Liverpool’s analysts, admitting that the staff had been wrong about which way every Chelsea taker would shoot.

One of the most notable things about the shootout at Anfield on Wednesday was that Chelsea goalkeeper, Mike Penders, was constantly checking his towel to see where the Liverpool takers would shoot.
It did not help the Belgian, who only saved Gravenberch’s fairly tame strike, but when asked about his tactics by ITV after the game, Mamardashvili revealed that he had been passed similar information, with similarly little success.
“I had this paper as well, but they wrote everything wrong!” said the 26-year-old.
Asked about how he felt about the shootout in general and how he prepared for his match-saving stop against Emegha, Mamardashvili was not giving too much away.
“I wanted to enjoy it before the game and I did. I wanted to save more, but sometimes one is enough!” he said.
“Before he shot I was just looking where he will put it, in the end I decided to go to my right side and I saved it.”
Joe Gomez and Andoni Iraola were also asked about Mamardashvili while speaking after the match, with both praising the former Valencia man for standing up to be counted when needed.
“Giorgi’s a great keeper,” Gomez told ITV. “We know at the club sometimes guys aren’t always regular players, so to come in and do as well as he did, props to him.”
“I think he had a very good performance against Spurs in the first game,” Iraola added. “We told him we might need to save two because we have to know someone [else] will miss a penalty. I think overall he guessed a lot of the penalties, a lot of the shots.
“Every team does their research, sometimes players change, but Giorgi has been on course for a lot of them.”
