‘It’s Damaging,’ ‘You Have No Control at Home’ — Super Bowl Champion Sends Message to NFL Players’ Wives After Kelly Stafford’s Complaint

Kelly Stafford recently complained about the NFL’s schedule-making system, arguing that her husband Matthew Stafford’s Los Angeles Rams do not receive a “true bye week” because they return from their Week 11 break on Thanksgiving Eve.

The Rams play on Nov. 15, then have their bye on Nov. 22. But then they turn around and play on Wednesday, Nov. 25, leaving them with only 10 days between games, compared with the usual 14-day gap when a team plays on Sundays before and after its bye.

Kelly added, “After 18 years around this league, even I need a week off during the season… and I have never played a single snap,” she wrote, before adding, “I’m tired just watching from the stands. Can’t imagine how the guys feel.”

Meanwhile, her comments are now drawing criticism from a former Super Bowl winner.

T.J. Ward Has a Pointed Message for Kelly Stafford

One person who took issue with what Kelly Stafford said was former Denver Broncos’ Super Bowl-winning safety, T.J. Ward. The two-time Pro Bowl safety appeared on Wednesday’s edition of the “Speakeasy” podcast to explain why he believes her point of view is flawed.

“Outside of family members, your wife is the biggest extension of you,” Ward said. “At some point, we have to tell the wives to get off Twitter. Get off. We understand your feelings; whether right or wrong, you reflect me in the biggest and most important ways. Whatever you say might as well come out of my mouth and be on my Twitter. Get the wives off of Twitter; it’s damaging.”

Then, what Ward had to say next could stir up some more drama. As he suggested, in a way, that Matthew Stafford has “no control at home.”

“It’s like you have no control at home,” Ward added. “She says whatever she wants; she does whatever she wants. I know that sounds crazy because, as individuals, you have that right. But if I have to watch what I say on Twitter and within the organization, then you have, you watch what you say because you are a reflection of me.”

Ward is not wrong in that the media is quick to run with everything a girlfriend or wife might say regarding their spouse and their team.

In essence, if Kelly is critical of someone, a specific part of the Rams, or anything related to the NFL, people will naturally wonder whether Matthew shares those same thoughts. And in some cases, they may assume that the former NFL MVP agrees with everything that comes out of Kelly’s mouth, whether that’s actually true or not.

That’s just the nature of the game. As Ward said, wives are an extension of their spouses, but that doesn’t mean they have to stay off Twitter altogether; they should perhaps exercise a bit more caution about what type of message they share.
