When Luis Enrique first took charge of Paris Saint-Germain, back in the summer of 2023, the Spaniard inherited a side in transition.
Lionel Messi had decided that, two years after joining from Barcelona in one of football's most seismic moves, he'd had enough of life at the Parc des Princes. Rather than reunite with a manager who had helped him on his road to greatness at the Nou Camp, he opted for Miami to enjoy the twilight years of his career in a far sunnier environment.
In Europe, however, PSG fell short. Borussia Dortmund reigned supreme in the semi-finals before proceeding to face Madrid, who suffocated their opponents at Wembley to lift Europe's biggest prize once again.
For a long time, it looked as though Champions League glory would never come. Mbappe certainly felt that way, with the forward finally sealing his move to Madrid in 2024.
Everything changed last year, however, when PSG produced a mesmeric performance to batter Inter Milan 5-0 and end their agonising wait for the biggest prize of them all. The way they tore through their Italian rivals, time and time again, was astonishing. Desire Doue was the star that night, scoring twice. Achraf Hakimi, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Senny Mayulu also struck, while Ousmane Dembele completed his redemption arc after his issues at Barcelona earlier in his career.
