Jaissle on team news, 'unity and togetherness' and outside noise

Newcastle United boss Matthias Jaissle has been speaking to the media before Saturday's Premier League game against Fulham at Craven Cottage (kick-off 15:00 GMT).

Here are the key lines from his news conference:

  • Jaissle said Matias Fernandez-Pardo is "progressing and training with us again" after the virus he had but that they "need to see against Fulham how he is in a physical state". He said Lewis Miley "showed a good reaction after [coming] back from injury" and that "progress is exactly how I expected and I wished for."

  • He added that "Joelinton unfortunately went out with an injury again and we need to make the final treatment plan for him and see how long he will be out."

  • Jaissle said that everyone in the group is united "for sure" and added: "The fundamental thing in the process at the moment that we can count on is the unity and togetherness."

  • On how clear the players are about his instructions, principles and the gameplan they have, he said: "Really clear. As we lead with open doors, we listen a lot. Not only talking. It is important in my leadership style that you listen to the players and we offer them always the open door so if there is anything unclear then they will drop in when they have the chance."

  • He was also asked whether the players are aligned with his ideas: "Of course. That was never in question, at least I am not aware of it."

  • On whether he has felt pressure on his position, Jaissle said: "I try to not follow things that are written but here and there you get some comments. The nice part is that I got even more the feeling from within the club [about] how committed they are and that is something really important in a week where there is speculation or rumours. It was good to know, good to feel but I try not to be distracted." He added: "I try and focus on the things that I can influence and that is not rumours and speculation."

  • On the January window, the Newcastle boss said: "It is on us to get the best out of the current squad. We have a lot of potential players - young signings we did in the summer - but as a manager you always aim for adjustments in each transfer window."

  • Finally on Saturday's game, Jaissle said: "The next game is always the most important. So now, against Fulham, [it's about] getting that confidence back, getting that braveness back to play our style. To have a good result then again a good feeling until the next match. I'm looking forward to seeing the right reaction."
