Pressure mounts on Sage as Newcastle beat Palace
Harvey Barnes celebrates scoring for Newcastle at Crystal Palace in the Premier League

Newcastle United secured a much-needed win at Selhurst Park to pile the pressure on Crystal Palace manager Pierre Sage.

After a drab first half low in quality, Newcastle raced into a 2-0 lead by scoring twice in 11 minutes after half-time to secure a third top-flight win under Matthias Jaissle.

William Osula's first-time finish from Jacob Murphy's 47th-minute cross set the Magpies on their way before Harvey Barnes finished well to double the lead and spark a chorus of boos from frustrated home fans.

Lukas Hornicek saved well to keep out Adam Wharton and substitute Dario Osorio.

But Palace, who had been the better team in the first half, crumbled after Osula marked his first start since the opening weekend of the season with his first goal since May.

The Denmark forward took his goal really well as Newcastle won at Selhurst Park for the first time in six years when Steve Bruce was in charge.

Palace had made a lively start but with Jean-Philippe Mateta and Daichi Kamada both having attempts, but the problems are mounting for Sage.

The Frenchman is only four months into a three-year contract but has now presided over five defeats in eight Premier League games.

What a week it has been for Manchester United.

Wednesday's 4-1 Champions League humbling against Como has left boss Michael Carrick teetering on the brink, his team's form a far cry from the terrific run they went on when he was appointed in January.

Bruno Fernandes was key to United's impressive displays between January and May, but the club captain is on the bench following his outspoken post-match interview in Italy.

Should the Portuguese playmaker feature, he can rely upon an excellent record against the Cherries, having been involved in nine goals in nine Premier League appearances against them (five goals, four assists).

Last December, this fixture produced a 4-4 game-of-the-season contender. Ruben Amorim was gone within a month, and such draws are becoming a problem for Carrick. United's past three league games have finished level; they last had a longer string of draws in September-October 1992, when they drew five on the spin.

Worryingly for Carrick, Sunday's opponents have become something of a problem team. United are winless in six against the Cherries, drawing four and losing two.
