In the second quarter of the Kansas City Chiefs' 28-24 road loss to the Denver Broncos, CBS play-by-play man Jim Nantz addressed Kansas City's signing of kicker Justin Tucker to their practice squad.
Tucker, 36, is a five-time First-team All-Pro and one of the NFL's best kickers as recently as 2023. He was handed a 10-game suspension for violating the league's personal conduct policy, facing 16 accusations from massage specialists of inappropriate sexual behavior and harassment.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid fielded a flurry of questions about signing Tucker earlier this week. Nantz, speaking late in the second quarter after Kansas City kicker Harrison Butker made a field goal, summarized the situation.
"Of course, one of the big stories this past week is that the Chiefs, because of the way Butker has struggled, going all the way back to the start of last season, they signed kicker Justin Tucker to their practice squad," the longtime broadcaster shared.
"Last year, Tucker had to serve a 10-game suspension for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. Given the multitude of allegations of non-consensual behavior, Tucker signing this week drew a sharp rebuke in Kansas City and, really, all over the NFL landscape."
Color commentator JJ Watt then chimed in.
"And understandably, Andy Reid and the Chiefs organization, at his press conference this week, had to spend almost half of it answering questions about it," the former NFL Defensive Player of the Year shared.
Reid seemed frustrated by the amount of Tucker-related questions he fielded on Wednesday.
“Yeah, so he’s done his suspension, you know, took care of that business there, but I’ll leave it at that for ya," he said to one question
“I try to do my homework on it,” Reid added. “See exactly what has taken place since, but you know, I mean the kid, he served a suspension. It’s been time; there’s been time involved with it. So, that’s how I value it.”
Butker, a three-time Super Bowl winner with Reid on the Chiefs, made one of his three field goals last week against the Seattle Seahawks. He missed another field goal on Sunday against the Broncos.
He was drafted in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL Draft, the same draft that Kansas City selected starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes in.
At 5-2, the Chiefs are no longer in first place in the AFC West; that honor belongs to the 6-2 Broncos, who find new ways to win each week.
