The screws are turning on Dan Quinn’s Washington Commanders tenure, with the head coach under pressure from fans following their latest disaster against the San Francisco 49ers.

The Commanders headed into Monday Night Football on the road in San Francisco, looking to turn their 2026 fortunes around. Washington was 1-3-1 heading to the Bay Area, tying their last game against the New York Giants, after a game-winning drive in overtime blew up in their faces.

However, it didn’t take long for the Commanders’ woes to catch up with them cross-country. In the second quarter, with the Commanders trailing the Niners 13-3, Quinn committed an “inexcusable” offense.

Washington’s drive stalled at the San Francisco 13-yard line after the Commanders failed to convert on fourth-and-two.

An illegal shift penalty compounded an incomplete attempt into the end zone, while cameras appeared to catch head coach Quinn taken aback by the realization that his side had reached fourth down and had let at least three points slip by going for, and then converting a field goal, instead.

Washington improved in the second half and held the 49ers to just 3 points in the final two quarters, while scoring 14 points of their own. Ultimately, they fell short, as San Francisco improved to 6-0 with a 23-17 win.

After the game, Quinn insisted that he knew his team was going for it on fourth down, contrary to popular belief. “I definitely knew it was fourth down,” Quinn said.

“We were going for it, and I was — I think what you’re referring to, I was probably saying, like, with the illegal shift, there’s not a penalty to go for a field goal.

“Like, it doesn’t go, like, it’s the turn on downs. Like, I think somebody asked me, ‘Can we kick a field goal?’

"So, now we were going for it. We knew we had to go for some fourth downs to be bold in the game.”

The tide is also turning on Quinn in the capital, too, and fast.

“Holy s—- Dan Quinn actually didn't know it was fourth down and tried to kick a field goal. There has never been a more fired coach,” one reacted on social media.

“If you have a Dan Quinn first coach fired ticket, you’re just over a half away from cashing it,” another reacted.

“I give up if Dan Quinn isn’t fired today, man. You can’t see what this roster REALLY is until you fire the head coach that’s constantly putting this team in a position to lose every week,” a third said.
