Barcelona have been fined just £503 after being found guilty by the Spanish football association over their summer approach for Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez.
After what was one of the summer’s most significant transfer sagas, Barcelona launched a record-breaking charge for the Argentinian international and Alvarez himself made it publicly clear that he wanted to complete a controversial switch to Catalonia.
However, with the former Manchester City ace forced to stay put in the Spanish capital and with the fierce Atletico fanbase making their frustrations abundantly clear, Diego Simeone’s side accused the reigning La Liga champions of approaching Alvarez without first notifying them in writing.
Following an announcement on Tuesday night, it was confirmed that Barcelona had been fined just €602 (£503) and the matter was now officially closed. The Atletico Madrid hierarchy also complained to FIFA, but were informed that football’s governing body had no jurisdiction over the case.
While there might have been late summer speculation that Arsenal were weighing up a potential blockbuster swoop prior to the September 1st deadline, Alvarez remains at the Metropolitano and officially opened his La Liga account with the winner in Atletico’s 1-0 victory against Deportivo A Coruna last weekend.
Alvarez’s current deal with Simeone’s side runs until June 2030 and Atletico have made it clear they will not sanction any future move to Barcelona.
🚨 Barcelona have been fined €602 following Atlético Madrid’s complaint to the RFEF regarding how the Julián Alvarez saga was handled.
The fine was imposed under Article 133 as failure to comply with orders, instructions, agreements, or regulatory obligations.
