Jeremy Jacquet and Bradley Barcola are both settling in nicely at Liverpool after making the move from Ligue 1 this summer.

Jacquet has been impeccable from day one, rightly earning a French national team call-up after cementing himself as Virgil van Dijk’s go-to centre-back partner. Barcola’s burn has been slower, but the forward will hope to kick on after scoring a Champions League hat-trick in midweek.

The two players had only ever experienced football in France previously, and have both now offered fascinating insights into the things which are different about playing in England with Liverpool.

Linz, Austria – October 14: Bradley Barcola of Liverpool FC celebrates after scoring his teams fifth Goal during the UEFA Champions League 2026/2027 match between LASK and Liverpool at Oberösterreich Arena on October 14, 2026 in Linz, Austria.

Jacquet is getting used to more one-on-ones

Just about everything about Jacquet has been impressive since his move to Liverpool, and the 21-year-old was a deserved winner of the club’s Player of the Month award for September.

He will be very much needed as the Reds head to Brentford on Saturday, and ahead of that game he sat down with Liverpoolfc.com, with one of the topics being the differences he has noted in the Premier League compared to Ligue 1.

“There are quite a few differences really,” he said. “But I find that the biggest difference of all is the intensity of the duels and individual battles.

“Not the general intensity throughout the whole match but rather I’d say there are more one-on-one battles to contend with during the 90 minutes.”

Jacquet also looked ahead to Brentford, revealing the thoughts of Andoni Iraola on taking Liverpool to the Gtech Community Stadium.

“It’s going to be a big game for us,” the centre-back said. “The manager has already told us that it’s going to be a battle all over the field. “However, we’ve been working hard in training, even though time has been a bit short. And we will be ready for tomorrow.

“I think that we’ve already shown how we can bounce back over in Austria but now it’s important to get back to winning ways, this time in the Premier League.”

Barcola claims Liverpool are less tactical than PSG

Like Jacquet, Barcola has had to adapt to the rigours of the Premier League, and is certainly taking longer than his younger countryman to do so.

A return to the Champions League – a competition he won in each of the last two seasons with PSG – brought out the best in him, but Liverpool fans are yet to see that domestically.

Barcola has been speaking to French media this week to give his assessment of life on Merseyside so far, and has told Telefoot that he thinks the Premier League is ‘less tactical’ than over in Ligue 1.

“The English league is different, and I see it as less tactical,” he said. “Perhaps that’s because we were playing under a manager who was extremely strict tactically (Luis Enrique).

“There are fewer changes on the pitch here. With my former manager I had to move into central areas and then out to the flanks for another player to take my place, whereas here it’s completely different.”

Although Iraola does like his wingers to be able to play on both sides, and has already shown that he will deploy Barcola, as well as his other options, on the left and the right, he does tend to keep them in one position throughout the game rather than have them operate with fluidity in matches.

Barcola’s observations should not be seen as a negative, though, with the 24-year-old praising Iraola as well as his new teammates.

“Things are going well,” he said. “I’ve been able to meet my teammates, and there’s also a very good coach with some great ideas, so I’m trying to adapt, it’s very different to PSG.”

It’s interesting to hear how both players are dealing with the differences in playing style both at Liverpool and in terms of the opposition they are facing. Game by game they are getting to grips with it, and when they are both fully settled, there has been enough evidence to see that they will be big players for the Reds.
