Busters for Raiders Week 8 vs Jets

The Raiders have put comfortable wins well behind them. Every game now is either a blowout loss or a nail-biter. This one was the latter. The Busters this week should help tell the story as to why that was.

Busters

DC Rob Leonard

Six possessions - six scores. That's how the Jets began this game. Geno Smith was looking like a damn All Pro for much of this game. And backup running back Braelon Allen had 121 yards rushing...in the first half. And it would have been much worse had Allen not gotten injured in the third quarter. Something is very wrong with this Raiders defense and when everything is collapsing, you look at the top.

After giving up SEVEN YARDS per carry to Braelon Allen Sunday, the Raiders moved into dead last in the league in yards allowed per rushing attempt, giving up an average of 5.1 yards per carry on the season. That suggests that teams could pretty much just run on every play and never even see a third down. There is absolutely no excuse for a team with a former defensive line coach as their defensive coordinator to be this bad at stopping the run.

Through the air, they allowed Adonai Mitchell to have a career game. His 142 yards was 40 yards more than his previous career-high and just the second time he'd ever even surpassed 100 yards in his three-year NFL career. And his touchdown in the game was just his third ever.

The Raiders came into the game having tied a franchise record for most consecutive games allowing 27 points. They had already set the new record at six straight midway through the third quarter while making it five straight games allowing 30 points.

LB Nakobe Dean

The quarterback of the defense once again led them in tackles. But this time it wasn't all it was cracked up to be. He had a hand in each of the Jets final three scores, giving up runs of nine and six yards to lead out their final scoring drive of the second quarter, leaving the entire left side open for Braelon Allen to run for a 21-yard touchdown in the third quarter, and giving up an 11-yard catch on their final scoring drive in the fourth quarter.

Of his 12 tackles, only two were solo tackles. The rest were assists. And only two of his combined tackles were on plays held under four yards. If you're giving up at least four yards before making the tackle, that's not gonna get it done.

DE Kwity Paye

Mr Invisible did his disappearing act again. He had a total of two assists in the game with no other stats on 43 snaps (67%) and runs consistently going right through his position. This included running right through him three times on the Jets' final scoring drive of the first half and picking up 19 yards on those plays. He didn't even get in on the tackle on any of those plays. And, you know, the rest of the defense could certainly use as little help in the form of pressure on the QB, you know? So often with Paye I hear one of the Bobs from Office Space in my head "What is it...ya do here?"
