GM Wesley So won his fourth national title at the 2026 U.S. Chess Championship after beating the defending champion, GM Fabiano Caruana, 1.5-0.5 in rapid tiebreaks. The previous day played out the least likely scenario: So lost to GM Sam Sevian and Caruana won on demand in his game just to make it to the playoffs. But after a nearly sleepless night, So came back to win his first U.S. Championship in four years and $56,000.

As covered in the previous report, WIM Rachael Li won the 2026 U.S. Women's Chess Championship in round 11 without any playoffs.

The next world-class event at the Saint Louis Chess Club is the 2026 Clutch Chess Champions Showdown featuring the blockbuster lineup of GMs Javokhir Sindarov, Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura, and Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu. The three-day event begins on Tuesday, October 27, at 1 p.m. ET / 19:00 CEST / 10:30 p.m. IST.

Playoffs: So 1.5-0.5 Caruana

So won his first title in 2017, then won again in 2020 and 2021, and four years later he's earned his fourth. This year must be one of the toughest, considering the catastrophe in round 11, but he nevertheless maintained that 2017 was the most difficult as it fielded a 2817-rated Caruana and a 2793-rated Nakamura, as well as a dangerous GM Alex Onischuk, who also played at a 2800+ level in that event as well, according to So.

After the last-round loss against Sevian, So said, "I didn't sleep well at all... only two or three hours." Hardly able to put the loss behind him, he was not in the mood to play, but So also gave credit where credit is due. "Kudos to Sam. He had a very tough tournament. I was shocked with the way he played a really good game, but I also played very badly."

So commented that this year's championship featured an unusual amount of blunders. He said he was losing against GMs Ray Robson and Jeffery Xiong, but ended up winning both games. The level of play with Caruana in the playoffs was also "very poor quality for both of us. So many blunders and so many mistakes." Both players had just played at the 2026 Chess Olympiad in Uzbekistan before this event, and he said, "In the end, I was really on my last breath. I was literally seeing 10 pawns for Black; my mind was all over the place. But I think Fabi was extremely tired too."

It's hard to say who was the moral winner in the draw in game one. So gained a winning advantage with the black pieces in a Nimzo-Indian Defense and could have won on the spot if he had found 34...Qd4+ and 35...Ra1, not a hard combination to spot under normal circumstances—if we may ignore exhaustion and nerves. Caruana went on to save a dead-lost, pawn-down endgame.

Had So won that game, he would have just needed a draw with the white pieces in the second to clinch the title. As it happened in game two, Caruana played a dubious pawn sacrifice in the opening, and with every move it grew clearer that this would likely be the final game. We weren't going to have another draw.

So went for the critical line and returned the pawn to quickly castle queenside, and both players launching pawn storms on opposite sides of the board. Nerves were clearly present, as So stalled a bit in his attack, but there was no doubt what the result would be when So won a piece on move 22. GM Rafael Leitao takes us through the Game of the Day below.

Congratulations to Wesley So, and we will return with coverage next week of Clutch Chess Champions Showdown!
