IndyCar is set to travel to Europe next season. The North American single-seater series will visit the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, GPblog can confirm.

The American series will cross the Atlantic Ocean for the 2027 season, with the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya set to host a race. It will not be a one-off event either, as a multi-year deal has been agreed between IndyCar and the Catalan circuit.

In the past, IndyCar has never had an event in Europe. Outside of North America, it only had races in Australia, Japan, and Brazil. The last time it traveled outside of the United States or Canada was in 2013, when the São Paulo Street Circuit hosted an event.

It would be a homecoming event for Alex Palou. The current IndyCar champion hails from Sant Antoni de Vilamajor, a village near Barcelona. He has won all but one IndyCar title since the start of the 2021 season and also claimed victory at the Indy 500 in 2025.

No Formula 1 in Barcelona in 2027

After the current season, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya will lose its permanent place on the Formula 1 calendar. From next year, it will alternate with the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps. The Belgian Grand Prix will take place in 2027, before F1 returns to Catalonia in 2028. The two circuits will then alternate until 2032, with each hosting a race every other year.

This year, the circuit has also hosted MotoGP and the World Endurance Championship. With its extensive experience hosting major motorsport events, it is a logical choice for IndyCar to make its European debut there.

Plenty of familiar faces for European supporters have already been confirmed to race in IndyCar next year. Former Formula 1 drivers Marcus Ericsson, Alexander Rossi and Mick Schumacher have seats secured. Dennis Hauger and Marcus Armstrong also competed in European feeder series before making a switch to the North American competition.
