Guisborough Town fight back to draw against Lincoln United

(Northern Premier League East Division)

Guisborough Town produced another dramatic afternoon at the Kevin Edward KGV Stadium on Saturday as they left it late to fight back for a draw against Lincoln United.

Town’s striker turned make-shift centre back, Connor Simpson, was the hero as his 89th minute strike rescued a point for the Priorymen.

Guisborough started the brighter of the two sides, as just two minutes into the game Kallum Griffiths’ in-swinging corner from the left brushed the Lincoln United crossbar.

A fast start to the game, which did not die down!

Just minutes later, Elliott Beddow provided a nice bit of trickery (as he did all afternoon) down the right-hand side and put in a perfect ball across the face of goal.

But Finley Rose could not adjust his feet quick enough to convert from close range.

Rose was a standout for Town in the game as he emphasised just how much he is “loving it” playing for Guisborough.

“When I signed it was probably a gamble for the club, as I have never played at this level.

“But I’ve come here and I’m enjoying my football – we play the way I want to play,” commented Fin.

Rose and his teammates continued to threaten Lincoln United’s goal in the first 45 but, it was Lincoln who drew first blood.

Liam Moran got his first of the afternoon as he rose highest from a corner to fire Lincoln United 1-0 up on the stroke of half time.

Moran went on to double Lincoln’s lead just after the break with a brilliant finish into the top corner for 2-0.

But the Priorymen did not buckle under, even with Lincoln forging two goals ahead.

A continuous flurry of opportunities came and went for Guisborough with Matty Willshaw, Matty Tymon and Joe “Fergie” Ferguson coming closest.

Interim Guisborough boss Gary Forster praised his side’s efforts for creating chances, but he added that his side should have got more from the game.

He commented: “The way we played, we needed to make sure we got the three points.”

Town’s efforts were eventually rewarded in the 67th minute as Elliott Beddow yet again beat his man down the right flank and his fine strike nestled beautifully into the bottom left corner.

The atmosphere at the KGV began to build, as did the anticipation for an equaliser of the home fans in another good crowd of 354.

And it did not take long for their wishes to be realised in the 89th minute.

Billy Waller’s initial effort from 25 yards out kick-started a game of pinball in the Lincoln United 18-yard box.

The ball eventually dropped to Simpson who used his natural striker’s instinct to finish finely into the bottom right-hand corner.

Simpson was highly praised by his boss as Forster said: “I think Connor Simpson played his best performance in a Guisborough shirt.

“And he popped up with the equaliser, so I thank him for that!

“If he starts doing that more often then we’ll be laughing.”

Forster now turns his attention to Tuesday night’s trip to Ossett United, which will be his final game in interim charge.

With injuries continuing to affect his squad, he admitted he would assess the “walking-wounded,” before the fixture, but remained confident in his side’s ability to compete.

He added that in-form Town “will give anyone a game at the minute”.
