The 20-year-old was shown a yellow card by referee Steven McLean after flying into a challenge on the Dundee United striker during Celtic's 2-2 Premiership draw at Parkhead. VAR reviewed the incident but opted against upgrading the punishment.
Grant, speaking on Celtic TV, felt replays showed Donovan was rash rather than reckless.
He said: "His legs went through his legs. When I saw it, I was concerned - but the replay shows that he has got a bit of luck. Fair play to the referee, he made the right call."
However, former Hoops midfielder Allan believes Dundee United supporters will be looking for consistency after comparing the incident to Kai Fotheringham's red card for St Johnstone against Rangers at Ibrox last weekend.
Allan told Sportscene: "For me, it's very similar to Kai Fotheringham's for St Johnstone at the weekend. All be it, I don't think he makes the same amount of contact. He does nick the calf, I think a lot of Dundee United fans will be asking for a bit on consistency. I don't think he catches him with the same momentum. Colby Donovan just gets away with one there."
And Celtic legend Bonner also felt Donovan was fortunate to avoid a dismissal.
He told BBC Sportsound: "I think it's a big moment. I am glad the player is up and walking about, you don't want to see anybody getting injured. That looked like he was late, and it looked high for me."
Peter Grant - Celtic TV: Referee got it right. Donovan was lucky but did not make enough contact to warrant a red card.
Scott Allan - Sportscene: Similar to Kai Fotheringham's red card and Dundee United fans will question the consistency. Donovan "just gets away with one".
Pat Bonner - BBC Sportsound: Challenge was late and high. Believes Donovan was fortunate not to be sent off.
