The New York Mets have plenty of work ahead as they attempt to recover from a disappointing campaign and put together a more competitive roster for next season. Their pitching staff figures to be a particular focus, especially after the organization moved on from several familiar arms during its difficult season.

New York traded Freddy Peralta to the Tampa Bay Rays and Clay Holmes to the Chicago Cubs at the trade deadline, before the pair reached free agency, and now the organization will have to rebuild its pitching depth again.

The Mets began that work on Monday, acquiring a less established option who was briefly a member of the Boston Red Sox organization.

New York Mets Claim Jack Anderson After Boston Red Sox Stint

“The Mets have claimed right-hander Jack Anderson off waivers from the (Minnesota) Twins,” MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo reported. “Had seven Major League appearances last year for Minnesota and Boston with a 2.19 ERA.”

Anderson, 26, made his major league debut with the Red Sox early in the season before eventually losing his spot in the organization. The Twins subsequently claimed him off waivers in July, giving him another opportunity to establish himself at the major league level.

“This is the second waiver claim of 2026 for Anderson,” MLB Trade Rumors’ Darragh McDonald wrote after the Mets’ claim. “He began the year in the Red Sox’ system and made a brief major league debut with Boston in April, getting into three games. He was optioned back to the minors and then was put on waivers in July.”

Anderson made four appearances with Minnesota after Boston cut him, bringing his major league total to seven games during his rookie campaign.

Former Boston Red Sox Pitcher Jack Anderson Gives New York Mets New Depth Option

Despite his limited experience, Anderson produced encouraging results in his first major league opportunities. He finished the 2026 season with a 2.19 ERA across 12.1 innings, allowing three earned runs while striking out 12 batters.

That performance offers some intrigue for a Mets organization that needs to identify affordable pitching options capable of contributing next season. Anderson also provides roster flexibility, with minor league options potentially allowing New York to move him between the majors and Triple-A as circumstances require.

The addition is hardly a blockbuster move, but it represents another opportunity for the Mets to find useful bullpen depth without making a significant financial commitment.
