The finale of the PGA Tour Champions season has had some memorable moments over its first nine years. With some help from the tournament, here's a look at the top memory from each of the events.
Kevin Sutherland won the inaugural Charles Schwab Cup Championship held at Phoenix Country Club, claiming both the tournament victory and the season-long Charles Schwab Cup title. The event marked the return of elite professional golf to Phoenix Country Club on a national stage.
World Golf Hall of Fame member Vijay Singh closed with a spectacular 10-under 61, one of the best final rounds in tournament history, to win by four shots.
Jeff Maggert holed out for a dramatic walk-off eagle in a playoff against World Golf Hall of Fame member Retief Goosen. The shot instantly became one of the most memorable finishes in tournament history while also securing the season-long Charles Schwab Cup title for Scott McCarron.
Kevin Sutherland and Paul Broadhurst battled through the longest playoff in tournament history, requiring nine extra holes and carrying over to Monday morning because of darkness. Sutherland finally won with a birdie.
At age 64, World Golf Hall of Fame member Bernhard Langer won his sixth Charles Schwab Cup, underscoring the longevity, discipline and work ethic that have defined his career. Langer called it “an up-and-down week” and said he was “literally overwhelmed with emotion.”
World Golf Hall of Fame member Padraig Harrington set the tournament scoring record at 27 under par, finishing at 257 and winning by seven shots. At the same time, Steven Alker completed his improbable rise from Monday qualifier to Charles Schwab Cup champion.
Steven Alker captured the tournament title after winning the season-long Charles Schwab Cup the previous year, edging World Golf Hall of Fame member Ernie Els and Stephen Ames by one shot in a tightly contested finale.
Bernhard Langer won the championship at age 67, adding another chapter to one of the greatest careers in PGA Tour Champions history and proving once again why he is considered the standard-bearer of the Tour.
Stewart Cink won both the championship and the season-long Charles Schwab Cup, closing out the year with a two-shot victory over Steven Alker and establishing himself as the newest dominant force on PGA Tour Champions.
