Spanish tennis star Rafael Jódar was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct after he swore at a ball kid during the Shanghai Masters
Jódar reportedly yelled, “Give me the f---ing towel, damnit,” in Spanish
In May, Jódar was accused of shoving a ball kid at the French Open
Tennis player Rafael Jódar has been penalized for his behavior at the Shanghai Masters.
On Wednesday, Oct. 14, the Spanish athlete, 20, was flagged for swearing at a ball kid during his match against the Netherlands’ Botic van de Zandschulp. Jódar used the expletive when he requested a towel from the young volunteer.
Jódar appeared to recognize he was under a time constraint to return to the line for a returning serve, and umpire Jimmy Pinoargote issued a warning, according to The Athletic. That’s when Jódar apparently blurted out, “¡Dame la puta toalla, coño!” to the ball kid, which translates to, “Give me the f---ing towel, dammit!” per the outlet.
Umpire Pinoargote, who speaks Spanish, handed Jódar a code violation for his unsportsmanlike conduct and told Jódar, “I understand, Rafa, but not like this,” according to The Athletic.

Jódar reportedly claimed he hadn’t said anything wrong and asked the chair umpire to repeat what he said to warrant the violation, but Pinoargote declined to repeat the expletive.
Pinoargote told Jódar he cannot speak to the ball kids like that, per The Athletic.
Jódar was at the center of a similar controversy in May when he was accused of shoving a ball kid at the French Open. Footage quickly made the rounds on social media, but Jódar denied the accusation.
“No, I didn’t touch her. I mean, I would never do that,” Jódar said in his press conference after the match. “She was walking backwards... I didn’t push her or anything. I was saying to my dad to give me the things he was going to give me after my toilet break when I was coming back.”
“But yes, she was in the middle, so I think she was trying to get out of the way going backwards,” he continued, speculating that “she fell, not because I pushed her, but because it was something... the cover, was right behind her.”
