England’s Eddie Jack really has the name for the game against Australia

The paceman was given the middle name of the 2005 Ashes-winning captain.

Cricketing royalty was conferred upon Eddie Jack when he was just a few days old after being given his middle name in homage to 2005 Ashes-winning captain Michael Vaughan.

The Hampshire paceman was born during the final match of the series as England ended an 18-year wait for a Test series victory over Australia following a seesaw battle for the ages between the old rivals.

Jack’s parents decided to mark the occasion by bestowing their second son with the middle name Vaughan, although the 21-year-old explained it was not a unique occurrence in his family.

He told PA: “I’ve got Vaughan, my elder brother’s middle name is (Jason) Robinson from the 2003 Rugby World Cup and my little brother has Hamilton from Lewis Hamilton’s rookie year in 2007.

“We’ve all got a sporting theme, it just so happened I got the cricketing one. I imagine they waited until we won the Ashes – it would have been a bit anticlimactic if we’d lost!

“I actually met (Vaughan) when I attended my first ever cricket match at Edgbaston in 2016. Dad called him over, we got a picture and sent some brownies up to the Test Match Special commentary box with a little letter explaining the story.”

Jack, who recently received his first senior England call-up for next month’s T20 series against Australia, came through the age-group ranks with Vaughan’s son Archie.

He said: “It’s a bit of a strange one to be named after your mate’s dad. He’s pretty sweet with it, he doesn’t get too weirded out by it.”

The Ashes 2005 connection doesn’t stop with Vaughan as Jack spent time under the wing of talismanic former all-rounder Andrew Flintoff, who heaped praise on the fast bowler during their time with England Lions.

Jack said: “He’s got that hero status. When he speaks people listen and when he does speak, he speaks a lot of sense.

“I try not to put too much onus on other people’s opinion. That gets put under pressure when it comes to someone like his opinion because you naturally want him to rate you. I take a great deal of confidence from the favour he put in me.”

Jack has been handed an England development deal for the second year in a row and despite playing just seven T20s, he seems poised to make his international debut Down Under as one of just four specialist quicks in the touring squad.

The youngster, though, is not getting carried away as he revealed he has carried forward some advice he got from England Test captain and potential future team-mate Joe Root in 2022.

Jack added: “A while back, we had an Under-19 Q&A with Joe. He’s probably the best player we’ve ever had so I thought he must be goal-driven.

“I asked him about how far into the future he looks and he really surprised me with his answer – he said ‘I don’t set specific goals; I’ve got one continual goal and that’s just to upskill constantly’.

“I took as much from that as I could and tried to apply that to my progress and my development. I feel if I focus on a process and a drive to always be better than I was the day before then things generally look after themselves.”
