Manchester United have launched a major new consultation on the design of their proposed £2bn Old Trafford stadium, with supporters being asked to help shape the club’s future home. The club wants fans to give their views on the planned 100,000-seat ground, which is intended to replace the existing Old Trafford and become the biggest stadium in the UK.

United have now opened a survey covering everything from the matchday experience and atmosphere to preserving the club’s heritage and improving transport links. The move marks the latest stage in the development of the ambitious project, with the club stressing that the final design has yet to be decided. Early images released in March 2025 showed a striking, tent-like structure with three large supports inspired by the trident held by the devil on Manchester United’s badge.

However, the concept prompted debate among supporters, with questions raised over whether the proposed design would reflect the identity and traditions of the club.

United have now made clear that those early images were conceptual and that the plans remain under development.

The Manchester Evening News reported on the latest update, which will see supporters given a more direct opportunity to influence the stadium’s eventual appearance and facilities.

The survey will cover five main areas: creating a world-class football stadium and matchday experience, heritage and legacy, atmosphere, the wider stadium campus, and getting to and from the ground.

Collette Roche, the club’s chief executive of New Stadium Development, said: “Our proposed new stadium is one of the most significant projects Manchester United will undertake in the next 100 years, and it is vital that we shape it together with our fans.

“Above all else, this is a football stadium built for them, so getting the details right matters.”

She added that the club was committed to ensuring supporters helped inform decisions on affordability, accessibility and the traditions that had made Old Trafford special.

The survey has been sent to season-ticket holders, official members and supporters who have bought hospitality packages at Old Trafford within the past three years, among other groups.

Fans have until noon on Friday, November 6, to submit their responses.

United also plan to hold focus groups bringing together supporters from different backgrounds to explore the issues in greater detail and test emerging ideas.

The club has promised to share the findings and explain how supporters’ feedback is helping shape the design.

The proposed stadium would be built around 350 metres north-west of the current ground, on land secured by the club earlier this year.

United have spent more than 115 years at Old Trafford, which currently holds nearly 74,000 spectators. They are expected to continue playing there while the new stadium is constructed.

The future of the existing ground has not yet been decided.

The stadium is also intended to anchor a wider 370-acre regeneration project at Trafford Wharfside, which is expected to deliver around 15,000 homes, create 48,000 local jobs and generate more than £7bn in annual economic value.
