TAMPA — The Red Wings certainly didn't wither away after a lousy first period Tuesday, Nov. 3, against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
The Wings battled back, cut into the Lightning's advantage, but couldn't complete the comeback, losing 4-2.
J.T. Compher's power play goal, at 5:29 of the third period, sliced Tampa's lead to 3-2. Compher got open between the hashmarks and snapped a shot that eluded goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy, Compher's second goal.
The Wings had two consecutive power plays in the period after Compher's goal but couldn't convert - they were 1-for-4 on the power play - with Vasilevskiy standing tall in net. Vasilevskiy robbed both Lucas Raymond and Viktor Arvidsson in close, maintaining Tampa's one goal lead.
Tampa's Ryan McDonagh's empty net goal with under a second left gave the Lightning the 4-2 final score.
Lucas Raymond opened the Wings' scoring and comeback attempt. Raymond skated into a slot after getting a pass from J.T. Compher and fired his sixth goal in the last seven games, making it 3-1 at 10:23 of the second period.
The Wings had two glorious chances to cut into the Tampa advantage further late in the second period. Michael Rasmussen and Michael Brandsegg-Nygard both had outstanding looks but shot wide, with Vasilevskiy committed to the other post.
Brayden Point had two goals (one a power play) and Anthony Cirelli added the eventual game-winner, giving Tampa a 3-0 lead at 8:41 of the second period.
Goaltender John Gibson played one period, stopped 11 of 13 shots, but didn't return, the Wings calling it a lower-body injury. Daniil Tarasov, who earned the victory over Florida, Monday, Nov. 2, relieved Gibson and stopped 11 of 12 shots.
