The San Jose Sharks have made a “serious” offer for Simon Edvinsson.
That’s according to Elliotte Friedman, in Friday’s 32 Thoughts column.
“The talks with the Sharks are substantive,” Friedman wrote, “with at least one serious offer between them — an offer that was not accepted by Detroit.”
Friedman said he had heard that the Boston Bruins, Nashville Predators, St. Louis Blues, and Seattle Kraken had also taken a “long look” at Edvinsson, among other teams.
He also added that the Red Wings have been asking about young centers.
For the San Jose Sharks, realistically, that’s 19-year-old Michael Misa, 22-year-old Filip Bystedt, or 23-year-old Zack Ostapchuk. 21-year-old Will Smith, who’s played mostly wing in his NHL career, was drafted as a center.
Keep in mind, that’s pure speculation, on my part.
But likely, only 2023 No. 4 pick Smith or 2025 No. 2 pick Misa would qualify as “centerpieces” in a potential Edvinsson deal. Bystedt and Ostapchuk are more solid complementary assets in a blockbuster.
Edvinsson appears to be a fantastic fit for the San Jose Sharks. The 6-foot-6 Swede is just 23, and he’s already a bona fide top-four defenseman, with the potential to be a top-pairing blueliner for a long time.
But at what cost to the Sharks?
This should all come to a head soon: Edvinsson is an RFA, who must be signed by Dec. 1 to play this season.
