Rangers suffered a deeply frustrating evening at Dens Park on Saturday (17 October), with a 2-2 draw against Dundee bringing an abrupt end to their impressive seven-game winning streak.
Meanwhile, further down the Scottish football pyramid, the news was far brighter for the Ibrox club as their next generation continues to make serious noise on loan. Rangers starlet Max Cameron was singled out for special praise by Alloa Athletic manager Andy Graham after producing a standout performance down the left wing in Saturday’s commanding 3-0 win against East Fife.
The 17-year-old academy prospect has had to remain patient for regular starting opportunities in Clackmannanshire, but when given the nod at Bayview Stadium, Cameron grabbed the chance with both hands.
What do you make of the ratings?
Operating on the left flank, Cameron proved to be a constant thorn in East Fife’s side during an electric first-half display. His direct running was instrumental in breaking the deadlock, as he picked up the ball in his own half before driving past his marker to win a corner before delivering a precise cross that allowed Owen Foster to head home Alloa’s opening goal in the 41st minute.
Speaking to Alloa Athletic’s in-house media after the match, manager Graham was delighted with the Rangers teenager’s attitude and performance, emphasising how he took full advantage of his rare opportunity in the starting XI.
He said: “I thought Max Cameron on the left in particular was so bright in that first half. He’s had to wait patiently for an opportunity, and that’s what we speak to the group about: ‘You get an opportunity, it’s down to you to go and take it, no one else’. And I thought he did that today. He gave them a lot of problems, and it’s no surprise… I know the goal comes from his set play, but it was probably his run before it that wins the set play as well.”
Saturday’s assist marked a pivotal moment in Cameron’s development during his spell in League One. The 17-year-old has been featuring regularly in Graham’s squad, making 13 appearances across all competitions for Alloa Athletic so far this term.
However, opportunities from the opening whistle have been limited, with the East Fife clash marking just his fourth league start of the season. Despite putting in considerable hard work and amassing 619 minutes of action on the pitch, the Rangers wide man had been waiting to register his first tangible goal contribution for the Wasps.
Taking his opportunity on the left flank to set up Foster’s opener finally got him off the mark, validating his patience and persistence during his loan stint.
Cameron was not the only Rangers starlet making waves at Bayview Stadium. Fellow Ibrox academy starlet Kyle Glasgow also produced a memorable display in the same game. Glasgow grabbed Alloa’s third goal with a breathtaking solo run from his own half, exchanging a slick pass with Foster before curling a strike into the bottom corner.
With Cameron unlocking his first goal involvement and Glasgow bagging his fifth goal of the season, Ibrox coaches will be delighted to see both teenagers making significant, game-changing strides in senior football under Graham’s guidance.
