With the series level at 2-2, South Africa piled up 438-4 at the Wankhede Stadium before dismissing India for 224 to win by 214 runs. The result secured their first ODI series triumph on Indian soil.
Quinton de Kock set the pace with 109 off 87 balls, while Faf du Plessis scored 133 off 115 before retiring hurt. AB de Villiers then punished the hosts with 119 off just 61 deliveries, hammering 11 sixes in his third century of the series.
South Africa added 169 runs in the final 12 overs, leaving India needing 439 to deny the visitors the series.
Ajinkya Rahane struck 87 and Shikhar Dhawan contributed 60, but India never seriously challenged the target. Kagiso Rabada claimed 4-41 and Dale Steyn took 3-38 as the hosts were bowled out in 36 overs.
