‘He Was Playing So Good Too,’ ‘Hate This So Much’ - Blazers Star Ja Morant’s ‘Heartbreaking’ Injury Update Leaves NBA World In Despair

Ja Morant’s first season with the Portland Trail Blazers had started with three straight wins. On Friday, the team announced that the guard has a Grade 2 left hamstring strain and will be re-evaluated in four weeks.

Morant got hurt Thursday night against the Memphis Grizzlies, the franchise where he spent the first seven years of his career. As word of the diagnosis spread, fans pointed to how well he and the Blazers had been playing when he went down.

Ja Morant’s First Game Against the Memphis Grizzlies Ended in Injury

Morant left in the fourth quarter at Moda Center and was ruled out for the rest of the night. He had 14 points on 6-of-14 shooting, two rebounds and three assists in 23 minutes before exiting. Memphis won 124-103 to stay unbeaten at 5-0 and hand Portland its first loss of the season.

It was Morant’s first game against his former team. The Blazers landed him in an offseason trade that sent Jerami Grant and Kris Murray to Memphis.

The Trail Blazers announced that Morant has a Grade 2 left hamstring strain and will be re-evaluated in four weeks. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that he is expected to miss at least four weeks.

The reaction came within minutes. The ‘Legend of Winning’ page focused on Morant’s form: “He was playing so good too.”

Morant averaged 16.3 points and 6.3 assists in 26.7 minutes over Portland’s first three games and shot 20-of-34 from the field. The Blazers outscored opponents by 48 points with him on the court.

His 19 assists in that span tied Deni Avdija for the team lead. He scored in double figures in all four games, including Thursday’s loss.

Fan page Hoops Muse replied to the report with the team in mind: “Ja & Blazer were rolling too, damn.”

Portland opened with a 124-83 home win over the Phoenix Suns, a game it led by as many as 52 points. Morant had eight assists and three steals that night.

Molly Morrison, who works for the Bleacher Report, also said, “The question hasn’t been if ja can still be an amazing player; it’s if he can stay healthy. he’s been hooping in portland. hate this so much for him.”

Two nights later, the Blazers won 128-120 at the Sacramento Kings. They followed with a 136-129 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on October 27, when Morant scored a season-high 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting.

Fan page ‘Shae Sharpe Show’ offered support: “Heartbreaking man. Prayers up for Ja. He was a HUGE part of the Blazers early season success.”

Analytics page ‘NBA Performances’ replied directly to the report: “This is getting outta hand.”

Fan page ‘503 Blazers Fans’ looked ahead: “Portland will now have to go through their toughest stretch of the season without Ja. Brutal blow for him and this momentum of the team.”

Portland has started Morant, Damian Lillard, Avdija, Toumani Camara, and Donovan Clingan in all four games. That group will now change for the first time.

Portland is 3-1 and fifth in the Western Conference, and it plays 14 games over the next four weeks, 10 of them on the road. The run starts Saturday at the Utah Jazz, the first of four straight road games, with the Denver Nuggets, Suns and Lakers to follow.

It also includes back-to-back home games against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Nov. 10 and 11 and a six-game road trip from November 13 to November 23.

Four weeks from Friday falls on November 27, when the Blazers host the Golden State Warriors. Morant’s re-evaluation is due around then.
