The United States U-17 women's national team has only played one match at the U-17 Women's World Cup, but it already holds a record.
A 17-0 victory over Samoa is the biggest win ever in a FIFA World Cup event at any level.
It took Maddie DiMaria 62 seconds to score the first of the six goals she would record against the Pacific Islanders, and the scoring pace rarely dipped for the Americans.
"We're really happy with the result," U.S. manager Ciara Crinion said after. "We knew the first game can be a tough game with the emotions and everything that goes with it. So we wanted to have a good performance, and we felt like we got that and continued to be able to put the ball in the back of the net."
Crinion was able to rotate her squad and got contributions off the bench, including a double from Carolina Reyna, whose left-footed goal from the top of the box was one of the nicest of the bunch the U.S. scored.
Those goals came just two days after her brother, senior men's international Gio Reyna, scored for RC Strasbourg against Paris Saint-Germain.
The U.S. will face a stiffer test in its next group matches in Morocco, meeting Kenya on Oct. 22 and China on Oct. 25. The top two teams from each group advance as do all but two third-place finishers, meaning the U.S. has a foot in the knockout stage after the big win.
