Dak Prescott’s days in Dallas could be numbered after NBC's Chris Simms suggested that the Cowboys may be “at the end of their rope” with the star quarterback.
On Sunday, the Cowboys’ chances of reaching the playoffs suffered a major blow following a 33-30 overtime loss to the lowly Cardinals. Prescott turned in a modest stat line during the loss, completing 19-of-29 passes for 195 yards and one touchdown while absorbing four sacks.
With the Cowboys (3-5) suddenly in danger of missing the postseason, Simms warned that Dallas’ patience with Prescott could be growing thin. Over eight games this season, the 33-year-old has thrown for 2,046 yards, 14 touchdowns and five interceptions.
“There’s been some murmurs … in Dallas that they’re a little bit at the end of their rope with Dak Prescott," Simms said on the latest edition of the Chris Simms Unbuttoned podcast.
If the Cowboys’ struggles persist, Simms even suggested that Dallas could look for other options under center this offseason.
"It’s like, things better turn around or he ain’t gonna be the quarterback there next year,” Simms added. “We'll see. We'll see.”
It remains to be seen, however, whether the Cowboys would really look to sever ties with Prescott, given how costly such a decision would be.
If Dallas were to cut Prescott, it would take on a $131 million cap hit before June 1, or $76 million after that date, per Over the Cap.
Should the Cowboys trade Prescott, they would absorb an $86 million or $31 million cap hit pre- and post-June 1, respectively.
Due to void years in Prescott’s 4-year, $240 million contract extension, the Cowboys would also assume dead-cap hits through 2030.
Prescott is far from the only big name whose future with the Cowboys has suddenly become a major talking point. Speaking to Ryan Clark on The Pivot podcast, NFL Insider Jordan Schultz revealed that teams around the league are inquiring about wide receiver George Pickens, who’s actively playing on a franchise tag.
“The biggest name people around the league are really starting to get curious about is George Pickens in Dallas,” Schultz began. “He's playing on the franchise tag. He has not been utilized the same way as last year.
“You're talking about, in my opinion, Ryan, one of the four or five most talented receivers in football.
“And the Cowboys’ season is honestly unraveling, especially defensively. So the question becomes — and this is the question that several teams have asked me — would Jerry Jones … consider having a little ace up his sleeve, if you will?
“And Dallas, would they consider using Pickens as a trade chip to improve another area of the roster? I'm not saying it'll happen, but given where the Cowboys are right now and given the demand for a talent like George Pickens, that is one I'm certainly watching.”
