Daniel Farke has inadvertently exposed a major issue currently affecting Manchester United following Leeds' 1-1 draw at Elland Road on Sunday.
Leeds continued their unbeaten home start to the Premier League season against United, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalising in the second half following Bryan Mbeumo's opener for the visitors.
But it is the contrasting comments made by both managers after the draw which have provoked the ire of United fans.
Speaking to BBC Sport post-match, Leeds head coach Farke admitted he was a 'bit disappointed' with the draw as he felt his side were the 'better team' at Elland Road.
"I thought we were the dominant side," he added. "But it is still Manchester United. They are very dangerous in each and every moment. It was not necessary to be in a losing position at half-time, but one moment we were not switched on, and they still have the quality to score a goal. We lacked a bit in our decision-making, in and around the box, to capitalise on our dominance.
"Second half, good start. Scored the goal. Then our strikes were too over the crossbar, crosses were too long, which more or less kept us away from capitalising more. All in all, it's a solid point.
"Overall, we brought ourselves into many good situations. Yes, there is a bit of a difference in quality to the top teams in this league, but overall we are happy."
United head coach Carrick, meanwhile, described his side's performance at Elland Road as a 'fresh start' despite failing to win for the sixth time in seven Premier League matches - in the context of Lisandro Martinez's public criticism of the club's board following United's 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night.
"I think it's important that, as a group and as players, you go into these fixtures fully aware of what this fixture means," he said. "It wasn't perfect. We had spells when we were good, spells when we were very good at times. The confidence is not sky-high, you can see that, but the players are trying to do the right thing.
"I thought we defended really well as a team, put everything into the game. Credit to Daniel and his team - they're a very good team. They test you and ask you a lot of questions, and if you're not ready for it you'll get found out. I thought the boys stood up to that fantastically well today."
In his post-match press conference, meanwhile, Carrick told reporters: "Not getting carried away because we didn't win the game. It felt like a fresh start. The boys are desperate to do well."
United supporters on X (Twitter) took issue with Carrick's description of the draw as a 'fresh start' and compared his remarks to how Farke addressed the result from Leeds' perspective.
One fan asked: "Carried away with what exactly?"
A second wrote: "Seven points after seven games, league already gone, out of Carabao, and it's a fresh start today."
A third stated: "Standards in the mud."
While a fourth wrote: "Bit sad that performance is seen as a big positive. Our standards have fallen so bad."
