Bath City ease to win over Hanwell Town to keep pressure up

Victory in this rescheduled game was City’s seventh in eight matches in all competitions as they kept up the pressure on leaders Poole Town.

Enzio Boldewijn and Harry Parsons netted in the first 10 minutes as Bath City eased to three points at Hanwell Town.

Victory in this rescheduled game was City’s seventh in eight matches in all competitions as they kept up the pressure on leaders Poole Town.

Another well-organised defensive display meant a third away clean sheet in a row for the first time since early 2023.

Jordan Tillson also made his 100th appearance in a second straight 2-0 success.

While City were dealt a blow losing Scott Wilson due to cramp, the disruption didn’t hamper their opening to the game.

Reuben Reid was pushed over by Ade Olumuyiwa 30 yards out and from the resulting free-kick Enzio Boldewijn caught Sam Beasant out by whipping it over the wall and into the far corner.

It was City’s quickest league goal of the season thus far, timed at 87 seconds, and they didn’t have to wait much longer for another.

Lovely combination play set the wheels in motion as Boldewijn collected the ball on the left before Joe Raynes and Pedro Elawar linked up on the opposite flank.

Elawar’s first time ball into the penalty area found Parsons, who readjusted his body to sidefoot home from eight yards.

Parsons’ stinger from 20 yards was collected by Beasant at the second attempt before Oliver Turner posed the first threat on Harvey Wiles-Richards’ goal, bending a free-kick over the wall and off the outside of the post.

Joe Raynes nodded Tillson’s corner and Parsons pulled well wide after benefitting from Harry Seabrook’s comical stumble over the ball on halfway.

Hanwell were cursing the upright just after half-time again as they were close to halving the deficit.

Henry Snee’s free-kick heavily deflected off the wall but thudded the face of the crossbar before rebounding to safety.

George Knight shot against the feet of Wiles-Richards as the hosts upped the pressure, but they were nearly caught for a third time with 20 minutes remaining.

Elawar laid the ball off to substitute Matt Bowman and his effort was flying wide, but caught Roberto Nditi forcing Beasant to readjust and work wonders to tip it onto the bar.

Alex Fisher nodded Bowman’s cross straight at Beasant when he should have tested the experienced glovesman, a former teammate from the Glenn Hoddle Academy in the early 2010s.

Hanwell brought on former City front man James Alabi but he was dealt with by ease as Scott Bartlett’s side held on to their comfortable lead.

“This’ll end up being a very good three points for us,” said Bartlett. “We identified a few ways we could hurt Hanwell and they’re a good team.

“I was really pleased that we got off to a great start. We played some really good football as well, particularly in the first half and later in the second when it became a bit more open.

“It’s a great free-kick by Enz and the second goal is a training ground move which I’m pleased with.

“We went about our work really well. We had to have a good structure behind the ball for the first part of the second half. We weren’t as fluid then, but you can have periods in football matches where you don’t have it all your own way.

“On the whole I thought we thoroughly deserved to win.”

Before Tuesday’s matches, only Wimborne Town and Uxbridge had conceded fewer than City this season, though both have played two games fewer.

Wiles-Richards kept his sixth clean sheet this term in all competitions, conceding just four in his last eight matches.

“Everything we do is built from a solid foundation,” said Bartlett. “That starts from the front – Reuben is 38 now but he works very hard across the opposition back line to limit the quality they can put into opposition forwards. I thought he was outstanding again, as were the back four.

“There are so many bits that go unnoticed. Tilly (Jordan Tillson’s) experience in there helps, he picks up so many second balls. He and Ollie (Chamberlain) were great.

“We won a lot of first contacts and if you do that you’re always going to have a chance. I didn’t feel like we were that threatened.

“As disappointed as we were in the second half against Gosport last week we’ve shown a really good reaction and it’s got to be that way.

“I think we’re in a good place.”
