Texas A&M's quarterback situation this season has been disastrous, as redshirt junior Marcel Reed, who threw for a career-high 3,169 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions last season, has regressed, while backup sophomore QB Brady Hart, who played all but several snaps in the second half during Saturday's 41-0 win over The Citadel, does not look ready to start against SEC defenses.
Former Texas A&M quarterback Conner Weigman, who transferred to Houston after the 2023 season, has thrived ever since, throwing for a career-high 2,705 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions, and rushing for 700 yards and 11 touchdowns. A change of scenery was clearly needed, as the former five-star prospect looked lost in the pocket, likely because of his lengthy injury history.
Houston head coach Willie Fritz's quarterback development background at Kansas is notable, but once he committed to the Cougars, the focus shifted to Weigman's skill set as a power QB who can move the chains with his legs and throw accurate, timely passes.
After a successful offseason of acquiring transfer players and returning key talent on both sides of the ball, Weigman's play has improved through the first seven games of his senior year, already throwing for 1,771 yards, 20 touchdowns, and two interceptions.
Conner Weigman may have played the best game of his college career in Saturday's 35-32 win over Oklahoma State, completing 24/33 for 343 yards and a career-high 5 touchdowns and one interception, looking poised in the pocket and making accurate throws, connecting with six receivers on the night.
Before transferring to Houston, Weigman didn't look like an NFL prospect, but a year and a half into his Houston career, I wouldn't be shocked to see the former Aggie signal-caller among the first quarterbacks taken off the board in the 2027 NFL Draft.
