Ex-Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe could come under consideration for the Man Utd job, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The 48-year-old left his post at St James Park after nearly 5 years at the end of July, and he is currently without a club.
TalkSPORT have claimed Brighton’s Fabian Hurzeler, Antonio Conte and Julian Nagelsmann are all serious candidates to replace Michael Carrick, but speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano mentioned Howe’s name as well:
“There are coaches available now for a top job like Man United; could be Nagelsmann; could be Eddie Howe, for sure, there would be several candidates. This was just to put some context to the Fabian Hurzeler links.”
The Englishman is currently the favourite at the bookmakers, with odds between 2/1 and 3/1. Hurzeler and Conte are joint-second among the other runners and riders (5/1), while Nagelsmann is priced at around 13/2.
It should be noted that Romano and other journalists have emphasised that Man Utd have not made contact with any manager so far (at the time of writing). Of course, if Carrick’s men do lose to Leeds, that could change.
While the club are officially backing Carrick at the moment, Romano said that “one specific person” in the “leadership group” does favour Hurzeler.
Based on information from other sources, it is believed that the individual is Director of Football Jason Wilcox. Head of Recruitment Christopher Vivell would reportedly back the appointment of Nagelsmann instead, whom he has worked with before.
In terms of Conte, it looks like his representatives are the ones putting his name forward for the job if it becomes available. In contrast, Howe is not thought to be angling for a return to management at this stage.
