The Oklahoma Sooners looked to be putting together the best offensive performance of the season for much of the game against the No. 15 Kentucky Wildcats. The Sooners finished with nearly 350 yards of offense and went 8-of-17 on third downs.
However, the team struggled to finish drives, scoring just 13 points. The offensive line has been a big part of the struggles this year, but showed positive signs until the fourth quarter. Left tackle Ryan Fodje injured his ankle and couldn't move well. Still, he tried to battle through it, but it led to Kentucky's defense getting after John Mateer.
After the game, head coach Brent Venables praised the fight from his depleted offensive line.
"I have a great appreciation for the fight and our guys on the offensive line," Venables said. "You know, bruised and battered as they were. Guys fought through a lot of things to give ourselves a chance to beat a very good team."
Despite the effort up front, Oklahoma's inability to turn productive drives into touchdowns remains a concern. The Sooners showed they could move the ball against a ranked opponent, but settling for limited scoring left little room for error late in the game. Fodje's injury further exposed the line's lack of depth, making his status and the unit's health key factors as the team prepares for its next game against the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
Oklahoma's challenge now is building on encouraging stretches without overlooking the issues that still hold the offense back. Better red-zone execution, protection adjustments and improved depth along the offensive line will be key to making those yards count. Venables' confidence in the group's toughness is clear, but the Sooners need that fight to translate into more consistent production if they want to turn those close contests into wins.
