Aston Villa manager Unai Emery spoke to the media after his side’s 1-0 win against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park.

Johan Manzambi scored the only goal of the game in the first half, which ended with Sven Botman lucky to stay on the pitch after a heavy tackle on Nicolas Jackson. Despite a VAR review, no red card was awarded for serious foul play.

Here’s every word Emery said to the media…

What did you make of the win?

“It was a tough match. To play here at Newcastle in their stadium is a very difficult scenario to achieve points. So we prepared the game, we got a very, very important three points. Tactically and defensively very good. Set pieces defensively very good. In transition, we had very good chances to score, and we scored. Then, when we could have our momentum, dominating with the ball, we stopped them, and we could as well take our time to attack them.

“So, very good how we are extending after our win in Tottenham, the same mentality away. Compete, defend, and as well play with personality when we could keep ball possession or keep our transition with the power we have.”

What was Aaron Wan-Bissaka's injury?

“Yes, I think it's a hamstring.”

How will you deal without him?

“He played fantastic matches when we needed him, last week, second half against Brentford, Wednesday against Fenerbahçe, and today. But of course, are coming different players being injured because the competition is so, so tough, and hard for the players as well - a lot of duels, a lot of contact.

“And today it's Aaron, but progressively it's getting better, Ian Maatsen. He is going to start to train with us next week. But we are going to find another solution like we did with Tyrone Mings the last 10 minutes.”

How well is Lindelof playing?

“Lindelof is a fantastic guy and professional player too. He has experience and is playing consistently. This is a very good example. I believe that when we need Harwood-Bellis, he will play in the same way. Why? Because he has the qualities like Lindelof and he is a very good example for him. He needs to watch him every day in training and playing matches.”

Manzambi injury?

“It's not clear. He was tired, he felt something, but first test, first check we did, it's not being something big.”

What did you make of Manzambi’s performance?

"He’s a good guy and he's very professional. He loves with passion, football. He wants to play in the way we are, with the demands we have. He decided to join us in summer because he understood here how he can progress, and that he can as well have his own challenges, and collective challenges, to improve in his career as a player."

When did you start looking to sign Manzambi?

"He joined us because he decided as well to be with us. Of course, we are playing Champions League, we are a team more being consistent. On the sports side, and of course economical side, he decided for us. We had two years ago Jacob Ramsey with us, and Newcastle signed him. Of course, I appreciate and I would have liked to keep him with us, but it's football."

How do you feel to get that 100th win?

"Hopefully I can play another 100 and win!"

Did you think Botman should have been sent off?

"Last year, we had a big injury for Youri Tielemans here. I am not complaining because I know football is like that and here they have strong players in duels. Now we must be ready to play at this level with some duels like that. The referees must protect the players but I am not complaining. I have not watched the action. It is something for the players which is hard to compete in this level with the duels."
