Al Michaels is widely regarded as one of the most authoritative voices in sports broadcasting, but an early blunder during Thursday night's Jacksonville Jaguars-Baltimore Ravens game has left fans questioning whether it is time for him to hang up his microphone.

Michaels was on commentary duty for Amazon's Thursday Night Football at M&T Bank Stadium, where Jacksonville kicked off Week 9 against a Baltimore side fielding an undrafted rookie quarterback. Shortly after kickoff, with Trevor Lawrence - the league's top-rated passer - on the field for the Jaguars, Michaels appeared to travel back in time a little too far.

"Back in 2001, Trevor Lawrence was your No. 1 overall draft pick," Michaels said. Shortly after, the game was halted by a flying drone, marking the second consecutive TNF matchup disrupted in this manner.

Lawrence was born in October 1999, making him barely a year old in 2001. The Jaguars actually selected him first overall in the 2021 NFL Draft out of Clemson, where he claimed a national championship during his freshman year.

Michaels, who turns 82 next week, has been calling NFL games for decades, yet fans have been vocal about their desire for him to retire throughout the first eight weeks of Thursday Night Football.

The gaffe came as Lawrence was making a compelling case on the field. The Jaguars (5-2) held a three-game lead in the AFC South, with Lawrence topping the league with a 112.6 passer rating, having thrown for 1,690 yards, 17 touchdowns, and four interceptions this season.

Lawrence wasted no time exploiting a Baltimore defense that had already surrendered 71 points in defeats to Cincinnati and Buffalo.

On the very first drive, Lawrence scrambled right and connected with tight end Nate Boerkircher behind cornerback Marlon Humphrey for a 52-yard gain. A subsequent 16-yard completion to Jakobi Meyers pushed Jacksonville to the 1-yard line.

Despite being halted on first and second down, the Jaguars punched it in on third-and-goal, capping a seven-play, 77-yard scoring drive. Following a brief stoppage due to a drone spotted in the stadium, the extra point put Jacksonville ahead 7-0.

The Ravens (4-4) faced a far grimmer situation. Two-time MVP Lamar Jackson remains sidelined on injured reserve with a thumb injury, while backup Tyler Huntley reportedly sustained a season-ending toe injury in relief duty the previous week.

That left 25-year-old rookie Joe Fagnano, Baltimore's third-string quarterback, to make his first-ever career start in wet conditions, with the Ravens mired in a three-game losing streak.

Baltimore is also working to finalize a trade for Arizona quarterback Jacoby Brissett, though the deal could not be completed in time for the contest.
