Shane Foley was handed a 12-day ban for careless riding following an incident in the 1m6f maiden at Navan on Wednesday.

The Raceday Stewards enquired into the incident, which occurred inside the final furlong, involving the Foley-ridden Possum, who finished third, winner Teofil, ridden by Luke McAteer, and runner-up Peace Pebble, who was partnered by Billy Lee.

The stewards noted that it appeared Possum and Peace Pebble bumped a couple of times. Evidence was heard from the riders concerned.

Lee stated that he challenged to the left of Possum and that the filly became unbalanced and rolled into him. Foley said that his filly was a little intimidated close to the line forcing him to take a precautionary check. McAteer stated that his mount had rolled left in the closing stages but felt he was always clear.

Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the stewards found Foley to be in breach of Rule 214 in that he had ridden carelessly. With this being his fourth offence in six months, they suspended the Co Kilkenny jockey for 12 days.

Foley is hoping Hotazhell can sign off his career in style at the Breeders' Cup after recording two Group 1 victories on the four-year-old this year.

After following up his Grosser Dallmayr-Preis success with a 50/1 triumph in the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown, the son of Too Darn Hot is set to run in the the Breeders' Cup Turf on October 31.

"He's never got really deep ground since his two-year-old days when winning the Futurity Trophy (at Doncaster) and he wasn't going to get that at Ascot, so it was either take on Calandagan and Ombudsman there or take our chance in America," Foley said earlier this week.

"The owners are American and are from just down the road from Keeneland so it might be a nice last hurrah."
