Russo header not enough to prevent Arsenal drawing with Villa

Chasity Grant gave Aston Villa the lead with their only shot of the entire match; they are now unbeaten in three games since Brian Sørensen took over from Natalia Arroyo as head coach.

Arsenal started the game brightly as Caitlin Foord, Georgia Stanway and Taylor Hinds all forced Akane Okuma into making as many saves in a matter of minutes. The attacking patterns were much more encouraging, though.

Despite this, Villa took the lead; Lynn Wilms threaded a pass through for Grant, whose shot at the angle deflected off the post and into the bottom left corner.

The Gunners have gone 1-0 down in three consecutive home games, the first time that’s happened in the WSL since 2015.

Renée Slegers made a double change at half-time with Emily Fox and Lisa Baum on for Taylor Hinds and Géraldine Reuteler. Fox was immediately involved as she was bundled over, and despite protests from the Arsenal fans for a penalty, play continued.

Steph Catley was next to go close, as she had a curling effort block, which fell to Baum but was comfortably claimed by Okuma. Catley then went off with an injury, with Élisa de Almeida replacing her. The Japanese goalkeeper was needed once more, as she tipped Kim Little’s audacious effort from the left over the bar.

Arsenal’s pressure paid off as they found an equaliser with five minutes to go, Blackstenius making an immediate impact off the bench to get a cross in which was headed in off the post by Alessia Russo.

Stanway had a huge chance at the start of added time, but she fired wide from close range.

Arsenal pushed for the winner, but it did not come. 28 shots, 2.61 xG, and 56 touches in the opposition box, yet it was the lack of a clinical edge that cost them once again.

They moved up to sixth in the WSL table and were still only six points behind London City in third after they lost to Manchester City; however, it was far from good enough for the Gunners.
