Did you know every team in the NFC has played in at least one NFC Championship Game since 2010? Well, all but one: the Dallas Cowboys, who have not advanced past the Divisional Round since their iconic Super Bowl run in 1995.

That marks 30 years of falling short, despite fielding top-ranked offenses and elite defensive units over the decades. Yet, reaching the conference title game, let alone the Super Bowl, remains an elusive mission.

The 2026 NFL season is off to another troubling start with Dallas sitting at a 2-3 record, coming off a painful loss to Tampa Bay's rookie quarterback. That defeat exposed a unit ranking among the worst defenses in the league, starkly contrasting an offense led by Dak Prescott that continues to put up points, proving once again that sustained winning requires balance on both sides of the football.

Cowboys Defensive Core Holds Closed-Door Meeting

When a team falling well short of external expectations begins to feel the heat, it frequently triggers the classic "players-only meeting," and the 2026 Dallas Cowboys have officially hit that flashpoint.

Earlier this week, linebacker DeMarvion Overshown revealed that the defensive unit met privately without coaches to confront their ongoing breakdowns. Overshown clarified that the gathering was not a "fire drill," but rather an urgent opportunity to establish mutual accountability.

"Look at ourselves in a mirror. We put what we wanted our standard to be... on the board," Overshown stated via Jon Machota of The Athletic. "We went bullet point by bullet point: Are we holding up to this? Are we being this? As a unit, how can we get closer? What is it?"

The internal soul-searching arrives at a critical juncture as head coach Brian Schottenheimer's squad prepares to visit the Green Bay Packers (3-2) at Lambeau Field.

While the two rivals fought to a wildly entertaining 40-40 tie during their previous matchup last season, history heavily favors Green Bay; Dallas has not defeated the Packers since 2016 and hasn't secured a victory at Lambeau Field since 2007.

In fact, across their last 15 head-to-head meetings in the series, the Cowboys hold a dismal 1-11-3 record against Green Bay.

Securing a road win in Green Bay would provide a massive morale boost for Dallas, potentially righting the ship before their postseason ambitions slip away.
