Neil Robertson 'went berserk' at tournament officials after British Open situation

This year’s British Open tried something a little different to most tournaments and former world champion Neil Robertson didn’t take too kindly to the set-up. The Australian gave tournament officials a piece of his mind, admitting he “went berserk” after the unusual scheduling situation left him furious. The start of the tournament brought a random draw, while a number of players didn’t discover exactly what time they would be playing until late in the day. This didn’t go down well with Robertson and he made his feelings crystal clear.

The qualifying draw was split between Leicester and the main tournament venue of Cheltenham, with the top 16 seeds playing their matches in the latter. However, rather than given a clear time frame, those on second in the evening session were merely told their matches would not start before a certain time. Fourth seed Robertson and opponent Pang Junxu - a player he faced at The Crucible in April - knew they would start at 8pm at the earliest. However, the game before them went on longer than anticipated, meaning they didn’t walk out until gone 10pm - much to Robertson’s annoyance. At the time he said he had seen “better organisation in pro-ams” and has now elaborated on his feelings.

“I let rip in the tournament office. I went berserk," the 44-year-old told Metro. “It’s something that’s got to change in that event because that’s why I called it a chook raffle. A chook raffle in Australia is just a completely random event, it’s just chaos going on. Nobody knows what’s going on. One minute you think you’re going to be playing in 10 minutes and then the next thing it’s two hours later.”

Robertson was also irritated by the practice table situation. World Snooker Tour have said one table was left available for players in the evening sessions but others were available for players to book at their leisure.

“I think half an hour is blocked out for players who are going on at 7pm and then once that has elapsed, then it’s just free game for a player who has booked,” Robertson said. “I went in there and you can’t practice, so I went a few hours without even hitting a ball.”

Robertson and Pang couldn’t play until the earlier match between Chris Wakelin and Luca Brecel wrapped. That encounter went the distance - with Wakelin coming from behind to win 4-3 - and Pang adjusted better to the wait than his opponent as he beat Robertson 4-1.

The Chinese player then progressed to the round of 32 in Cheltenham where he was beaten by English amateur Mark Joyce. Whether due to the unusual set-up or other factors, only four of the top 16 seeds got as far as the quarter-finals.

One of those, Mark Selby, was beaten by 32nd seed Jak Jones in the final. Robertson has played two ranking tournaments since his frustrating time at the British Open, most recently reaching the round of 32 in Shenzhen.

World Snooker Tour have taken Robertson’s frustrations on board and are already preparing changes for next year, saying: “We discussed these issues with Neil after his match and explained the reasons for the scheduling. We always take the views of players on board and make changes where it is practical, for example we have added a morning session to the opening day of this event next season.”
