The New York Giants have given everyone a quarterback debate. Tiki Barber is concerned about what happens when that conversation follows players into the locker room.
With J.J. McCarthy pushing Jameis Winston for the starting job, the former Giants running back warned that uncertainty at the position can complicate an entire week of preparation. Even a casual conversation between teammates can become another thing demanding their attention.
Speaking on WFAN, Barber outlined why a quarterback competition carries a different weight inside a team. Players need to know who will direct the offense and lead them into the next game.
“But when it’s the quarterback, it becomes disruptive to the locker room because guys are now talking about it,”Barber said.
He imagined the questions that could circulate as New York prepares for the Houston Texans.
“Hey, is Jameis even going to start this week?”
“Hey, is JJ going to start this week?”
Those were examples of the conversations Barber believes uncertainty can create. He did not report hearing Giants players arguing over which quarterback deserves the job.
His concern was how easily that discussion could take on a life of its own. A player might trust Winston’s experience, while another might be excited about what McCarthy showed coming off the bench.
“And it gets very distracting,” Barber said. “Because not everybody is going to have the same opinion about it.”
Barber emphasized the conversations that happen away from meetings and practices. Coaches can organize the work on the field, but players still talk when the meeting-room doors close.
“It just, it gets wonky,” he said.
McCarthy gave that debate fresh momentum during Sunday’s 34–27 loss to the New Orleans Saints. After Winston threw two interceptions, McCarthy entered and passed for 243 yards and a touchdown, helping New York threaten a comeback from 24 points down. He also threw an interception of his own.
That performance promptedChase Daniel to back McCarthy as the Giants’ starter, adding another former player’s endorsement to the discussion.
John Harbaugh declined to name his starter Monday. The Giants had a team meeting scheduled Tuesday, with their first practice of the week set for Wednesday.
Houston presents a substantial challenge regardless of the choice. Through Week 6, Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud ranks eighth inPFN’s 2026 Quarterback Impact rankings with an 82.6 grade.
For Barber, the concern extends beyond deciding whose throws looked better Sunday. Once Harbaugh makes the call, the offense needs to get behind it and turn its attention toward Houston.
“And I’m not saying it’s bad, it’s just distractions,” Barber said. “And that’s the last thing you can hope or want going into a tough week against Houston.”
