Newcastle United are on Merseyside tonight to face Everton in the first of a cup and league double header against the Toffees.
Lewis Miley has joined Newcastle’s injury list. Everton have worries of their own, with several key players battling illness and injury. Neither team has any suspensions.
Here is the rest of the team news.
Newcastle’s injury list looks a lot better this week. The latest concern is over Lewis Miley, who has a glute injury. There are also doubts over the availability of Matias Fernandez-Pardo, who has been suffering with illness that kept him out of the last game against Crystal Palace.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference on Tuesday, Matthias Jaissle said: “These two players are still doubtful. Question marks on if they can make it [tonight]. We need to see step-by-step to decide if they are able to be in the squad or not.
“With both of them, we don’t want to take any additional risk and, hopefully, they are getting back soon.”
Ewen Jaouen is still out with a thigh injury, but Jaissle was cautiously optimistic about Tino Livramento, and said that the England international has been working hard on his recovery from a knee injury.
Jaissle said: “I don’t want to put too much pressure on him [Livramento] but also the medical department. That is usually my approach when it comes to injuries.
“I can just assure you that I see him every day with a great professionalism in his rehab, hard-working, so hopefully we have him back soon and that he is stable in his approach when he is joining us.”
When it comes to team selection, Jaissle admitted that he is going to pick a strong team, even though the two clubs meet again in the league a few days later. Newcastle’s history in the Carabao Cup is one of the reasons for that – the Magpies have reached at least the quarter-finals every year since 2022.
“Due to the history for the club in that competition, I have the same approach – to play with the best possible lineup.
“It shows the importance about that competition and we will also be aligned with that and go all in.”
Everton are missing a few key players for tonight’s game, putting pressure on their paper-thin squad.
David Moyes is waiting for updates on forward Jack Grealish, and full-backs Jarrad Branthwaite and Vitalii Mykolenko.
Grealish has been ill, Branthwaite has been out with concussion after a clash of heads with Chelsea goalkeeper Emi Martinez that left the Argentinian requiring surgery on his jaw. Concussion protocols will dictate whether Branthwaite can play tonight.
Mykolenko was taken off during Everton’s league defeat to Arsenal, but the club haven’t revealed any details about the injury.
Moyes is short of options at full-back. If Branthwaite and Mykolenko are ruled out, Moyes could be forced to field midfielders James Garner and Merlin Rohl at full-back.
The Scot does have better options if Grealish is unavailable. Tyrique George, Brennan Johnson, or Tyler Dibling could replace the Manchester City man if necessary.
