Champions League results: Arsenal rallies for 2-2 draw with Bayern; Kylian Mbappé, Yan Diomande lead Real Madrid rout

Arsenal and Bayern Munich finished level 2-2 at Allianz Arena in Wednesday’s headline game of Matchday 3 of the Champions League.

It was the Gunners striking first via Eberechi Eze before the home side responded 10 minutes later thanks to Alphonso Davies.

Eze, who entered the match in the 10th minute for an injured Bukayo Saka, beat the offside trap, cleanly brought down a Martin Ødegaard long ball and fired a low shot past Manuel Neuer. After a VAR check, the goal was confirmed.

Harry Kane was creating all over the pitch through the first 45 minutes by any means necessary. There was a goal kick attempt by the Bayern Munich striker that nearly led to a Serge Gnabry goal. And then there was the beautiful through ball he fed to Davies, who finished off the pass with his right foot to equalize in the 35th minute.

Kane then put Bayern ahead in the second half, converting a penalty after Jurriën Timber was called for a handball inside the box. The goal extended Kane’s scoring streak to 10 consecutive Champions League matches, one shy of Cristiano Ronaldo’s record.

But Arsenal responded through Declan Rice, who finished off a well-worked move with Viktor Gyökeres to bring the Gunners level at 2-2.

Real Madrid puts on a show at the Bernabéu

In Madrid, it took until late in the first half, but José Mourinho’s side found a breakthrough against RB Leipzig in the 42nd minute. After some nifty passing, Arda Güler’s shot got stuck under goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt. That allowed Bernardo Silva to slip in and tap home his first for the club for a 1-0 lead.

Güler doubled the lead in the second half after a clever headed assist from Kylian Mbappé. The French striker then made it 3-0 in the 83rd minute with a curling effort into the top corner, assisted by former Leipzig player Yan Diomande.

Leipzig pulled one back two minutes later, but Diomande answered with a spectacular volley from inside the box for his first Champions League goal and the 4-1 win.

Aston Villa cruises to third straight win

Ross Barkley’s goal had Aston Villa looking at a 3-0-0 start in the league phase. The midfielder flicked on an in-swinging corner kick past Viking goalkeeper Arild Østbø to take the lead.

Emiliano Buendía would double the lead to 2-0 with a 32nd-minute penalty in front of a delighted Villa Park.

Villa added a third goal in the second half to complete a 3-1 victory. With wins over Club Brugge and Fenerbahçe, a third consecutive win in the competition put Aston Villa among the leaders in the Champions League table.

Around the grounds

Elsewhere, Sporting fell 3-2 to LASK after the Austrian side scored twice in a five-minute span in the second half. Luis Suárez’s penalty kick goal in the fifth minute was answered 10 minutes later by Christoph Lang’s equalizer.

Hans Vanaken’s goal in the third minute of first-half stoppage time put Club Brugge ahead of Lens before the Belgian side added two more goals in the second half, including one from Joaquín Seys, to secure a 3-0 victory.

Inter Milan overcame a red card to Alessandro Bastoni to take a 1-0 lead over Shakhtar Donetsk. Bastoni received two yellow cards in a span of two minutes, but Carlos Augusto scored in the 77th minute after Henrikh Mkhitaryan sent him through on a counterattack.

Real Betis also broke a scoreless deadlock against Feyenoord, with Isco converting a second-half penalty.

In earlier action, Manchester United have now lost their past seven matches in all competitions following their 4-1 loss to Como. Nico Paz opened the scoring in the 2nd minute and added his second of the match early in the second half. After a back-and-forth start, Galatasaray took control of their match against Lille with three goals in a 17-minute span to beat the Ligue 1 side 4-2.
