David Haye Urges Fabio Wardley To Take Year Off

David Haye thinks Fabio Wardley needs to step away from the ring for an entire year to rebuild his mechanics from the ground up following another brutal second-round TKO loss to Daniel Dubois.

While Haye still sees a path forward for Wardley, he doubts a standard eight-week training camp offers enough runway to fix the technical flaws Dubois repeatedly punished. His advice is simple: take an extended break to master the fundamental skills Wardley missed by turning pro without an amateur background.

“He should take a year out. But not a year out partying, holiday. No, just working on the basic fundamentals,” Haye said to talkSPORT Boxing about Wardley. “Go get a good Cuban coach, someone who just gets your legs right, gets your balance.”

Haye is assuming a lot if he thinks a year off in a Cuban school of boxing is going to rewire a 31-year-old brawler who learned his trade on the white-collar circuit. Fighters do not magically develop fluid footwork, ring IQ, and nuanced balance at this stage of life in an empty gym. Those instincts are drilled into kids through hundreds of amateur bouts between the ages of twelve and twenty.

If Wardley steps away for twelve months with millions already sitting in the bank, he will not return as Guillermo Rigondeaux. He will return as an older, heavier, rustier version of the exact same guy, minus whatever sharp edge kept him dangerous.

Taking a year off ignores human nature, especially for a fighter who just cashed massive checks. Inactivity dulls timing and slows reflexes, and when a fighter relies almost entirely on explosive athleticism and punching power, ring rust is lethal.

“In the heat of the battle, you do what you do,” Haye explained. “He hasn’t done the correct thing, enough reps.”

“He could continue in this division, and we’ll have some great fights, but it’s not going to be good for his health.”

The blueprint to keep his career alive is obvious: step down levels immediately. Wardley needs active reps under the lights against beatable, mid-tier opposition. He needs guys who will test him for six to eight rounds without having the world-class power or technical precision of a Daniel Dubois or Joseph Parker to punish every fundamental mistake.

The punishment he absorbed across those three elite fights is the kind that takes chunks out of a fighter’s prime. Throwing him into gym purgatory will only make him think too much in the ring, and a hesitant brawler gets knocked out twice as fast.
