Moretto: Milan ‘extremely close’ to agreement with Krösche after Frankfurt departure

This evening, Matteo Moretto has confirmed that AC Milan are once again trying to hire Markus Krösche as their Head of Football.

Throughout the summer – and even in the months since – Krösche’s name has never disappeared from the frame. Milan have remained clear that they wanted to complete the management structure and although Krösche’s decision to stay with Frankfurt was a setback, he was never seen as an unreachable hire.

He’s still been seen as the number one candidate and it’s always seemed like a move in the latter months of 2026 was possible.

Now, that seems even more the case, with Frankfurt officially confirming his departure this evening, by way of a mutual agreement, some of which can be read below.

“The past few years at Eintracht Frankfurt have been an extraordinary, intense and unforgettable period for me. Together, we have celebrated great successes and helped the club develop both on the pitch and financially. Winning the Europa League and sharing so many special moments with our fans will always mean a great deal to me. I am extremely grateful for those experiences.

“Over the past few months, I have spent a lot of time reflecting on my personal circumstances and professional future. After more than five very successful but also very demanding years at this wonderful club, I have increasingly felt that I need a change – and that a new impetus might also benefit Eintracht.

“When you reach that point, you inevitably start to lose some of the drive and vigour required for such a demanding role. I spoke openly with Mathias Beck about this because I expect myself to approach a position of this responsibility with complete conviction at all times.

“That is why I asked Mathias Beck to release me from my duties with immediate effect. This gives both Eintracht and me enough time to prepare for the future. I also wanted the situation to be resolved before the general meeting because it is important to me to have the opportunity to say goodbye in person.”

Krösche to Milan growing more likely

With this news, the links to the Rossoneri have only grown stronger and Moretto has provided a big update this evening about his future on his X account.

“AC Milan has never abandoned the trail of Markus Krösche as a possible Head of Football, and in recent days the parties have resumed intense negotiations in search of a total agreement.

“An economic agreement was reached months ago; the gap narrowed on the organisation of work within the structure of the Rossoneri club. The parties are now once again extremely close.”

Only time will tell, but it seems that it would not be a surprise if Gerry Cardinale were to eventually get his man.
