Robin Stubbs - widely regarded as one of Torquay United's greatest-ever players - has died aged 85.

Dubbed 'The Prince of Plainmoor', Stubbs scored 133 goals in 263 games in two separate spells for the Gulls.

He first moved to Plainmoor from Birmingham City in 1963 in a £6,000 deal and scored 24 goals in his first season in the old Division Four.

Stubbs scored 39 goals a season later - two of which came in arguably his greatest game as he scored twice late on as Torquay secured a 3-3 draw with top flight Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup third round in front of more than 20,000 fans at Plainmoor.

He equalised in the replay before the Gulls went on to lose 5-1 at White Hart Lane, although his goals helped Torquay win promotion the following season.

Stubbs moved to Bristol Rovers in 1969, but after three seasons returned to Torquay where he finished his career in 1972.

"Robin Stubbs was one of the greatest players ever to wear the yellow shirt," Torquay United co-chairman Michael Westcott told the club website.

"His goals, his pace and the excitement he brought to Plainmoor made him a hero to generations of Torquay United supporters.

"The title 'Prince of Plainmoor' was thoroughly deserved, but his place in the club's history rests on much more than the goals he scored. He gave people memories they carried with them for the rest of their lives.

"Robin's connection with the club remained strong long after he stopped playing, and it was always a pleasure to welcome him and his family back to Plainmoor."
