Stephen McGowan Raises Intriguing Brendan Rodgers–Dermot Desmond Question

Journalist Stephen McGowan has questioned whether Brendan Rodgers will publicly address his fallout with Dermot Desmond when the former Celtic manager returns to Glasgow next summer.

The former Hoops boss has yet to publicly respond in detail to the criticism directed at him by Desmond after his resignation in October 2025.

That silence has raised questions about what Rodgers might be prepared to discuss when he takes to the stage in Glasgow.

Speaking on PLZ Soccer alongside Peter Martin and Gordon Parks, McGowan questioned whether the event could provide an opportunity for Rodgers to give his version of events.

“Well, I don’t know how much… That’s the key question. How much can he set the record straight as he sees it? I mean, I would imagine there is some kind of legal restriction. Maybe that was time, but I don’t know.”

McGowan then raised the possibility of Rodgers addressing the breakdown in his relationship with Celtic’s principal shareholder.

“Nobody knows. Will he just come back and just indulge in kind of gentle platitudes? Do you come back? Do you declare war on Dermot Desmond? Is that a very dangerous policy? I would suggest it’s possibly is.”

The comments come almost a year after Rodgers’ second spell at Celtic ended following a 3-1 defeat to Hearts.

His departure was followed by an extraordinary public statement from Desmond, who accused the former manager of being divisive and misleading in his conduct.

Rodgers has not publicly answered those accusations in detail, leaving supporters without his full account of how his relationship with the club’s hierarchy deteriorated.

The Glasgow event could offer that opportunity, although there is no indication Rodgers intends to confront Desmond publicly.

The evening will be hosted by Paul John Dykes and Tony Haggerty, with an interview and supporter questions planned.

The event is being presented as an opportunity to revisit Rodgers’ two spells at Celtic, including the trophies, significant victories and experiences that shaped his time at the club.

However, the circumstances surrounding his departure remain a subject of considerable interest.

His relationship with sections of the support was complicated by his earlier departure for Leicester City, but his return in 2023 and subsequent success added another chapter to his Celtic career.

Whether he chooses to discuss Desmond or concentrate on his achievements at Celtic remains entirely his decision.

For supporters attending in June, one of the biggest unanswered questions will be whether Rodgers feels the time is right to explain how his second spell at the club came to such a difficult end.
