Brentford has confirmed it is supporting a police investigation into a dangerous incident that took place during the match against Liverpool on Saturday.
A statement from the club had directly addressed a video that was circulating on social media that appeared to show someone kicking a rugby ball from one of the high-rise buildings that back onto the Gtech's east stand. The ball that was kicked at a large height appeared to drop onto the stadium's roof, before the video cut away. The ball bounced off the roof of the stand before bobbling down, thankfully landing between fans and the playing field.
In wake of the incident, Brentford has published a statement that reads: "Brentford Football Club is supporting a police investigation after an item was kicked from a height towards the field of play during Saturday’s match against Liverpool.
"Brentford Football Club is aware of an incident involving an item being kicked from a height towards the field of play during Saturday’s match against Liverpool. Such behaviour is dangerous and potentially very harmful.
"The matter has been referred to the police and the club is supporting the relevant authorities in their investigation to help identify those responsible and take appropriate action, which may result in criminal prosecution.
"The matchday safety of fans, staff, players and officials is of utmost importance, and the club will support all efforts to ensure action is taken."
It remains to be seen what could follow from the investigation, with Brentford slamming the dangerous actions of those involved in the incident.
It put a rather negative slant on an otherwise fiercely competitive match in west London, which saw Liverpool fight back from going behind to win the match.
Keane Lewis-Potter opened the scoring for the Bees around the 44th minute with a header, but his side were down to ten just moments later when Yehor Yarmolyuk was sent off for violent conduct.
The midfielder was deemed to use a headbutting motion towards Jeremy Jacquet during a corner, with a VAR review deeming the threshold high enough for a sending off.
The game turned on its head from that point on, with goals from Victor Munoz and Alexander Isak completing a comeback for Liverpool to earn an important three points.
That saw the Reds jump up to fifth in the Premier League, while Brentford dropped to sixth after suffering a first defeat of the campaign.
