The Hurricanes remain undefeated at 6-0.
The No. 3 Miami Hurricanes had a tough test against Florida State on Saturday night. The game went to double overtime, but the Hurricanes held on to win 43-35.
This game ended in chaos, though. Facing fourth and 21, Florida State quarterback Ashton Daniels heaved a pass to Micahi Danzy, who caught it for a touchdown, but the call was overturned due to offensive holding.
Then, on fourth and 31, Daniels heaved another jump ball into the end zone, and Seminoles wide receiver Duce Robinson looked like he caught it, but it was ruled an interception on the field, reviewed, and upheld.
After both teams scored a touchdown in the first OT period, they went to a second, where a touchdown would have to be followed by a two-point conversion. Miami quarterback Darian Mensah hit his best target, Malachi Toney, for the double-overtime score.
Toney then threw, yes, threw, a pass to a wide-open Cooper Barkate for the two-point conversion.
Miami’s top wide receiver had a day against Florida State. Toney finished with 154 yards and two touchdowns on 11 receptions, easily leading the Hurricanes in all receiving categories. He also had 31 yards on two carries. While it doesn’t go into the official box score, the wideout was also, very importantly, 1 of 1 passing for that two-point try.
The Canes were down 21-14 with 9:33 left in regulation. Miami then drove for a touchdown, forced a fumble, and scored another to take a 28-21 lead. The Hurricanes' defense gave up a touchdown and couldn't score before regulation ended, forcing OT.
Miami got the ball second in the first OT needing a touchdown and ran only two plays. Mensah threw an incomplete pass, then Javian Mallory ran for a 25-yard touchdown.
The win keeps the Hurricanes undefeated and moves them to 6-0 on the year. Miami will next play Pittsburgh at home next weekend.
Florida State’s loss drops the Seminoles to 3-4. They have a bye next weekend and will play Clemson on Halloween.
