J.J. McCarthy named starter for Giants: What could it mean for the fantasy outlooks of Malik Nabers, Isaiah Likely?

As fun as the Jameis Winston experience can be in both reality and fantasy, we probably all knew that it would come to an end at some point this season. It seems like that point has arrived, as it was reported that the New York Giants are turning to former first-round pick J.J. McCarthy, to start in Week 7 against the Houston Texans.

Most of us remember McCarthy flaming out with the Minnesota Vikings, putting at risk Kevin O'Connell's claim to being a "quarterback whisperer." The Giants added McCarthy via trade after starting quarterback Jaxson Dart went down with a season-ending meniscus injury. Winston was named starter after Dart went down, and while the Giants haven't been horrid with him under center, it seems head coach John Harbaugh wants to see what the team has in the much younger McCarthy. The third-year signal caller might have forced the Giants' hand, as McCarthy came into the game in Week 6 and nearly led a fourth-quarter comeback to win the game. Not only that, but the Giants' main weapons, Malik Nabers and Isaiah Likely, both produced with McCarthy throwing the ball in the game.

Fantasy football analysts Matt Harmon and Ray Garvin go over what the Giants offense could look like with McCarthy starting in the video above.

Giants turn to McCarthy … but what does it mean for fantasy?

Garvin reveals that he's intrigued by the McCarthy move, as physical talent has never been the question with the young quarterback. The issue has been with him executing an offense. He can make all the throws — he just needs to make the throws to Nabers and Likely within the structure of the offense.

In fact, Garvin points out that both Likely and Nabers won't be moved in his rankings with McCarthy starting. Likely, in particular, should remain successful no matter who is at quarterback.

Harmon agrees, as Likely is only a tight end in title, not in execution. Likely is essentially an oversized, explosive, matchup-nightmare slot receiver who rarely lines up with his hand in the ground, like most traditional tight ends.

If McCarthy has left the Minnesota demons behind him and can operate the offense while filtering the ball to his top two targets, fantasy football managers should feel a lot more comfortable about the QB change in New York.
